What should happen with the Toronto Maple Leafs Core 4? Top free agent priority | Co-Sign/No-Sign

The Stanley Cup Final is set between the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers. Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti give their thoughts on the matchup and lessons to take from both teams. Mike and Dave bring back Co-Sign/No-Sign where they look at a potential Leafs coaching candidate, when they expect the Leafs to have a general manager in place, what the team decides to do with the Core 4 and who should be the team’s top priority to bring back ahead of free agency.

  1. Move Nylander for a solid D or power forward with grit, like Josh Anderson or Tom Wilson…or move him for picks and use his money to sign a free agent like Orlov who is a physical D that can move the puck as well.

  2. I think they will end up keeping the core 4 together. To the organization, not going deep into the playoffs is bad but missing the playoff altogether would be a disaster. With Buffalo and Ottawa ready to compete for playoff spots next year, any sort of retool could put a playoff spot in jeopardy. And that would be a no go for this organization

  3. The so-called core four really should be kept together. We'll go through them one by one. Everybody agrees Tavares and his $11 million contract are going nowhere. Matthews is the franchise cornerstone and likewise is going nowhere(unless maybe asking for $14-15 million). Nylander has played well the last 2 seasons and is not overpaid. Though constantly hammered, he really deserves to stay. That leaves Marner. Marner is multi- talented and a point-producing machine. Like Nylander, he gets hammered a lot, but replacing him with equal value would be a major problem. And, again like Nylander, he deserves to stay. Building the future on the core four is the best strategy 22:10 for Toronto.

  4. If healthy and wants to come out of retirement, I think Doug Wilson would be a great addition as GM.

  5. If it were me biggest priority would be Sammy, then shenn, acciari, bunting and orielly. The last two is if you can get them cheap. Also Kempf should be up on that list. Also I would try to run back the same team, it's getting closer and closer each year. They are just hitting their prime now, and if you trade any of the core 4 you only get worse. What d man is going to fix the Leafs? I would say it's important to have Rielly with a partner that will stay back and hit. Make it a bad time for and guy trying to cherry pick. They looked good together, then Brodie and McCabe can play with the two younger guys. But it's close if they can bring back bunting, left wing of bunting, knies and Robertson looks good. Grinders is what is needed and they can be had cheap in a lot of cases. They should also keep their first round pick and draft a big power forward. Murray can be moved without using it, even if they have to eat a million of the contract. Some team will take him, if not waivers and send him down.

  6. Move to American teams so they have a chance to win a cup (unless buttman leaves then they can stay and win immediately)

  7. Leaf Fans should be clamoring…. yelling and screaming for PATRICK ROY as coach…. if you heard his players talking . The way the emphasize being connected. Players disciplined to support the PUCK. The commitment to the Coach…

If Leaf fans were smart…. if Shanny was SMART you would install Patrick Roy.

But that is toooo bold for Leaf Land…. Too Risky for Leafland…..

But it is exactly what Leaf Nation Needs.

    Sandpaper at Coach.

Plus a GUY who would love to HOIST a cup and stick it to Montreal. Trust me while Patrick appears to have kissed and made up with the Habs… He would love nothing more then to Hoist the CUP as an ex hab Great in Toronto of all places…

But Leaf Nation wont clamour for it

  8. I understand the Leafs need a new GM but in response to discussion between the two Locked on Leafs’ cohosts (from a bit after the 13-minute mark), I don’t look forward to Joel Quenneville being head coach or Stan Bowman being GM. Both covered up sex abuse on Kyle Beach by 1-time Blackhawks’ video coach Brad Aldrich in the 2010s and in any case, will need permission from the NHL to work anywhere in that league. It’s time for Brendan Shanahan to appoint an interim GM whilst the search for more a permanent GM goes on so that the Leafs have that executive, even if only interim, in place for the draft and start of the summer free-agency period.

  9. All the Vegas coaches were and are tough no nonsense type of guys! You know, like MIKE BABCOCK!! and the soft little boys cried to management to get rid of him! The Leafs need to take the same approach all the winning team do, there's a way to play and if you don't like it, YOU ARE GONE no matter the player! The team in most important, not the players!
