Patrick Roy In The Mix For Blue Jackets Head Coach Job?

As the Quebec Remparts wind up their Memorial Cup run, a new name has emerged in the Blue Jackets head coach conversation: Patrick Roy. With Peter Laviolette likely going to the Rangers, Andrew Brunette being hired by the Predators, and Mike Babcock reportedly an unlikely option, it comes down to Roy or current assistant coach Pascal Vincent.

  1. I would be hesitant to say Roy has people management skills. Look at his time with the AVs and why that experiment failed.

Roy only went to the AVs if he could get an executive title in addition to being the head coach. Prior to returning the NHL he owned the Remparts while being their GM and head coach. Then after the AVs he went back to the Remparts but just as their head coach. Maybe his ambition and ego have chilled but we will see.

I wouldn’t be against his hire but I wouldn’t be for it. Just kind of meh, ok let’s see.

  2. I am not a fan of either of these options. Roy's gift as a goaltender don't necessarily translate to good coaching, and people skills. As far as Mr. Vincent, we just tried the "promote from within" experiment, and to say it was a disaster would be an insult to disasters. I know you guys point out that he is a different coach than Larsen, but it just really makes me nervous to think about promoting within.

Jay and I had discussed once before, our mutual desire for us to give one of the solid European coaches a shot. I would like to get Texier's opinion on Canadian Coach Marc Crawford as well, having just played for him in Zurich. He is one of my top 4 all-time favorite NHL coaches, but I know about his sometimes maniacal personality, as well. One of my other top all-time favorites is a guy we have already had, in Torts. I just hated Roy as a player, although I recognize his well-deserved status as one of the GOATs of hockey goaltending, without a doubt. I just don't think that translates to good qualities in coaching….(although if I had Elon Musk's money I would pay Roy so much money he COULDN'T refuse it to coach our goalies).

I also love Jay's point on hiring a coach of young players. NCAA coaches was a good point. I can't believe we haven't interviewed the Coach of the University of Michigan. We have a penchant for grabbing young future stars from that program, after all.
