Leafs have more questions than answers with deadlines looming

The Maple Leafs have no GM, no answer yet on the future of head coach Sheldon Keefe, and have now lost star assistant Spencer Carbery to the Capitals. As more questions creep up by the day, That’s Hockey examines what’s going on in Toronto and how Kyle Dubas instantly became a top target for the Penguins.

  1. Dubas believed in the talent and creativity of the core four. After it didn't work season after season, the whole world around Dubas was screaming to make the team tougher, so he did that more and more from season to season, as the exact same criticisms continued. I don't see it as this amazing evolution of the genius of Kyle Dubas like these guys.

  2. Matthews might likely stay until his contract runs out – then just check out if 1) the Leafs improved at all as a team? and 2) where does he want to live at that time & for what pay? Maybe he’ll play in Vegas with great teams there?

  3. I really hope they lose him for nothing like Calgary lost Johnny Gaudreau

  4. I can not believe this team let Kyle go to bring in someone like Treliving. Matthews, Marner and Nylander must remain on an untouchable list.

  5. Yes Dubas made some mistakes like overpaying some players, giving JT too much for too long, etc but he assembled a team that based on regular season performances, should've been able to do much better in the playoffs. That's on the players, especially the core 4 not the GM. He paid them well and always supported them. They didn't deliver when it mattered most yet for some reason they get a pass. Remember players like Phaneuf and Kessel getting roasted to a crisp every night by the media and fans. This is all on the players. The core 4 together just aren't the kind of players that go deep in the playoffs.

  6. I just don't understand what is the Leafs going to lose, the whole franchise, season ticket holders? The main stream of revenue is firmly entrenched, and unless the economy is going to crumble. You lose some players and you sign some back. It's not the end of the world. Leafs are not winning last year, and the last 50+ years, do you think the owners going to care that much? Shareholder equity and P&L, they are more concerned with. Everyone knows next person job's on the line is Shanny, and he know he have to take his time to find the one he can trust and work with.

  7. The Leaf's are a contract mess and it's Dubas's fault! He built a weak team that is talent heavy and grit weak! So who ever is the new GM will have to move the weak out, ie Mathew's and Marner and bring in strong cast of gritty talented support player's! Good luck! who ever takes the GM job. This is a tuff assignment for anyone.
