The Landeskog / Lonzo Ball Connection. Is Darren Helm Hanging Up the Skates? MacDermid Season Grade

There will be a connection between Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball and Colorado Avalanche Captain Gabriel Landeskog, maybe forever. Ball had the same surgery Landeskog did and has yet to return to his sport. A news report yesterday came out stating that the Bulls secretly feel like Ball’s career is over and he won’t play again.

While these are two different people playing two different sports, that’s not necessarily welcoming news for us Avalanche fans.

Adrian Dater also reported that he has heard Darren Helm is set to retire. After a troubling season with injuries, and him being 35 years old, kind of makes some sense.

Finally, we give Kurtis MacDermid his season grade. It’s about what you would expect.

  1. I think it’s good to note that hockey, unlike basketball (running), is low impact on the knees. Skating strides are fluid, vs stomping on joints. So I have somewhat higher hopes for landy than Lonzo for return.

  2. Anything more than a C- is just being generous for MacDermid. I think people just like novelty players. Sorry. I like players, not novelty items.

  3. Helmer scored one of the most memorable, important, and biggest goals in Avs History. He is a gamer and Professional. On Landy, i had this surgery. Mine was a total disaster and i ended up needing a replacement after the donor material literally disintegrated in my knee. It doesn't look good.

  4. MacDermid is not just an ice law executioner. He's also there to dissuade the bad guys from acting out. A fair grade for an enforcer should somehow include a stat showing reduced opposition misbehavior while he is on the ice. If he can keep his +/- at zero or positive, that's pretty good.
I expected to see him on the ice a LOT during the playoffs once the refs stopped calling penalties and the opposing team started taking cheap shots.
But that's a bit of a risk because you're not enhancing your team's defensive or offensive performance, you're just trying to skate out your own personal referee, and if he's "successful", you're probably facing a PK.
After Eberle's [censored] cheap shot, I really, really expected MacDermid out there to disassemble him and reform him into a plush toy, but Bednar didn't let loose the Dog of War. Bednar is the coolest of coaches, ice in his veins.
And Landy is not done until Landy says he is done.

  5. The Avs went from being a potential dynasty to having their team destroyed in a matter of a year. They'll have to wait another season to make any long-term moves at 1LW. 2C is still up in the air. They might not be able to retain Toews. Key roleplayers- EJ, JJ, Helm, Cogliano-may be moving on or retiring. Hth is Macfarland going to right this ship?

  6. Helm's goal was my favorite moment of the Cup run. It was the only game where I actually had a couple of people over to the house, and we woke up the neighborhood… OH MY GOD!!! was screamed about 47 times. We could not believe what we had seen. Go figure that two older guys, EJ with the pass and Helm with the goal, were the heroes of the second round.

  7. "People who succeed have momentum. The more they succeed, the more they want to succeed, and the more they find a way to succeed. Similarly, when someone is failing, the tendency is to get on a downward spiral that can even become a self—fulfilling prophecy." —Tony Robbins
