Say what you will about Dubas’s inability to get Toronto over the hump, he did a great job of maintaining flexibility on the roster and not locking the team into long-term commitments that pay players into their twilight years.

In 2016 Treliving drafted Matthew Tkachuk and Adam Fox for Calgary. Elite F and Elite D. I’d say that holds merit.
And you know one of the differences between Treliving and Dubas? Treliving actually played hockey and can spot the nuances that a computer print out in your office can’t catch….. he played defense and so he can catch a future elite defenseman like Adam Fox who went 66th overall and also the grit and heart of Tkachuk who went 9th.
It’s easy for Dubas to pick Auston Matthews in 2016 when you have the first pick overall.

Trelivings results are a mixed bag, something you can say about almost all gm’s ever. He had restrictions with ownership and running a hockey team in a Canadian city that wasn’t loved by every player. Now he has unlimited resources and Toronto is generally a welcome destination for most players, let’s see what happens.
