    Some lowlights:

    >In 2016, the Flames gave Troy Brouwer a four-year contract, with a $4.5 million cap hit. Brouwer had been an effective, rugged depth part for years. He was also turning 31 and had played a hard style of game. The deal was bought out after the second season.
In 2018, the Flames made a similar mistake when they signed a soon-to-be 31-year-old James Neal to a five-year contract, with a $5.75 million cap hit. He scored seven goals in his first and only season with the Flames before being flipped to Edmonton for Milan Lucic’s equally problematic contract.
Two summers ago, the Flames signed Blake Coleman, a chippy third-liner who was turning 30, to a six-year contract, with a $4.9 million cap hit. That deal felt similar to the five-year pact, with a $4.3 million cap hit, that the Flames gave Michael Frolik in 2015.

Treliving’s record in FA is kinda scary. Let’s hope he was paying a “move to Alberta” premium on those deals and that someone in the R&D department shows the dude what an NHL age-curve looks like.

Say what you will about Dubas’s inability to get Toronto over the hump, he did a great job of maintaining flexibility on the roster and not locking the team into long-term commitments that pay players into their twilight years.

Siegel is a pro-Dubas guy. He can’t be trusted to give a valid opinion on Treliving.

The only thing that makes me angry is that I foresee some shit happening that will be blamed on Treliving because of his FA history and not Shanafraud who set this all in motion out of fear of being exposed as inept and superfluous.

On July 1, 2024 after Dubas has been in Pittsburgh for a year, Malkin gets jettisoned to Остров Робидас (Robidas Island) and the Pens announce the signing of Auston Matthews.

    RemindMe! July 4, 2024

Jonas and Mirtle need to calm the fuck down.

They act as if dubas was slain as a martyr.

    🤷🏻‍♂️ I guess we’ll see

Athletic are supposed to be non biased but they have been all very pro dubas and anti shanahan through all this. Especially kloake and Siegel

  8. Neutral-President

I get the feeling that’s what Shanahan and the board wanted. They tried the new and unproven way. That didn’t work out. Now they want experience and proven results.

Like most people, hopefully, they learn from their mistakes. Let’s be thankful AND hopeful he made most of his mistakes with Calgary lol

    Here’s my take.

If Shanny’s really been pulling the strings at some level, or vetoing trades, wouldn’t it be better to hire someone that actually aligns with his vision?

This question is not asked at all. Who vetted Bill Peters?

  12. Matrix17

Hopefully Pridham can keep him from overspending

In 2016 Treliving drafted Matthew Tkachuk and Adam Fox for Calgary. Elite F and Elite D. I’d say that holds merit.

And you know one of the differences between Treliving and Dubas? Treliving actually played hockey and can spot the nuances that a computer print out in your office can’t catch….. he played defense and so he can catch a future elite defenseman like Adam Fox who went 66th overall and also the grit and heart of Tkachuk who went 9th.

It’s easy for Dubas to pick Auston Matthews in 2016 when you have the first pick overall.

the Bill Peters debacle should have been enough to see him never work in hockey again

Trelivings results are a mixed bag, something you can say about almost all gm’s ever. He had restrictions with ownership and running a hockey team in a Canadian city that wasn’t loved by every player.
Now he has unlimited resources and Toronto is generally a welcome destination for most players, let’s see what happens.

Couldn’t care less what The Athletic’s take is on this – they’re extremely biased in favour of anything related to Dubas and will just clown on this move (and worship Dubas wherever he ends up).
