Dubas: Gonna take some time off, settle my life down.

Penguins: Here’s a giant bag of money.

Dubas: You know, I think my life is already plenty settled. You’ve convinced me.

By now it should be common knowledge that « He’s not going anywhere » from coaches or GMs on a player being traded or « I want to stay here » from GMs or coaches is code for : he’s outta here

If I got canned after asking for more autonomy then I’d take the job too tbh

  7. airbag23

I’m willing to bet that someone at Pittsburgh told him they’d pay X amount if he left Toronto so he went to shanahan with a new price resulting in him not being resigned there

Leafs fans don’t understand PR talk

  9. The_DoBap

Watch him sign Spezza as GM, and Babcock as HC 😂

I didn’t see it that way. I believe he was saying, well if he chose not to move forward he wouldn’t just pop up elsewhere. He chose to move forward, MLSE told him to hit the bricks. Then he went elsewhere.

No serious adult would believe someone would commit to that statement if the organization rejected them.

“Oh, I wanted to go forward. They fired me. And I did say I wouldn’t go anywhere else, so I’ll pursue no other opportunities.”

No, of course not. That’s insane. The sentiment was conditional. It was based on the ongoing negotiations.

I wouldn’t hold this against him. It’s also the least egregious thing someone in hockey can do. He fibbed about staying unemployed… what!? Who cares?

Dubas has been talking to Phil Kessel lately

  12. shanster925

The fact Shanahan threw him directly under the bus was likely a motivating factor.

He didn’t lie. He meant he wasn’t going to quit and take a new job. If he stepped down as Leafs GM, it wouldn’t be to pursue a new job. But then he wanted to keep going, and he was let go.

“You won’t see me pop up somewhere else next week”

I don’t know why people are hating. He got the bag and a promotion too. Good for him

As an Islanders fan I fully support Dubas going to Pittsburgh. He will make them spend an obscene amount of money attracting pure skill guys and get them no closer to winning another cup. 👏👏👏

Stupid leafs fans bought his sob story instantly and went to blame shanny. Bet they feel stupid now.

  18. thestareater

Nobody realistically expected him to stay out of the league, it’s just silly and in my opinion, a lateral move on the Leafs part, especially since it’s coming out that Shanny was handcuffing and blocking trades, and when it came to light that Dubas wanted more autonomy instead of having to answer to Shanny, they axed him, and now he’s in a position where he doesn’t have to answer to anyone but the board, just like he wanted.

  19. Loyal-to-Earth

The man literally meant that he wouldn’t be a GM anywhere else 🙂

After growing up around the shanahan family, I can tell you, it’s their way or the highway. Micro managed for sure

I can’t believe Guy Fired From Job went out and got another job
