In a stunning turn of events, the New York Rangers are said to be seriously considering John Hynes to be their next head coach, despite his complete lack of success as head coach of the Nashville Predators and New Jersey Devils. Jon, you sound thrilled
It's very east to figure:
Since 2000, there has not been a cohesive plan for this organization. An owner more concerned about his band than either of his teams and his insistence on hiring a faded, one-trick pony, past his prime President/GM whose resume had been blank for nearly a decade even before his hiring. And yet, with a 23 year old record of exactly one Finals appearance and untold hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars spent pre-cap and post-cap, the luck of getting a HOF caliber goaltender (after passing him once before getting him on the second time around) and doing little to nothing with him – other than retiring his jersey and drafting, trades, pronouncements so outrageous (remember the Wade Redden quote) that even the defenders of 'the Sham' Sather had to laugh at him. In fact, it can be argued that Glen Sather's greatest accomplishment is finding an owner even more clueless and ignorant than even he has turned out to be.
So why bring this up when we're talking about John Hynes?
Because you could bring in Bowman, Arbour, Keenan and Toe Blake all in a group in their prime with a starting 5 of Orr, Potvin, Dryden, Gretzky, Howe and Lemieux and they still won't win. They won't win because of what is at the top. For the man that Dolan has lovingly termed 'the Godfather' (still don't understand that reference), the reality is this franchise has been rudderless and aimless since the Dolan/Sather era has been fused. Whether it was Low, Trottier, Sather himself, AV, Torts, Gallant, Quinn & Renney (& whoever else I'm not thinking of), the consistent has been Glen Sather. And anyone thinking that Drury is running the club exclusively isn't paying attention. NOTHING happens with this franchise without the blessing of 'the Sham' Sather. While you talk about Hynes making no sense, the Upper Management as a duo makes no sense. It's a joke and they are jokes. An Owner whose one accomplishment in life has been winning the lottery of privilege and luck. And the other who was able to ride the shoulders of Messier and Gretzky and play that hit single all the way to the bank. When you speak of Hynes and what he's done? What's Sather done? Until you rid the franchise of this cancer, you will NEVER see a championship. This franchise has been run by an Owner who could care less and a President who has been irrelevant since 1991. And yet here we are. It's the same thing on the ice as it is in the suites.
Its that simple.
All the talent in the world doesn't mean as thing without balls, passion and desire – exactly what Gallant alluded to in his end of term presser. It all starts at the top. And the Rangers top is pathetic, bloated, lazy and uninspired.
Hey Jon: I don’t have an opinion about Hynes one way or the other. I don’t know much about him. I also know that jumping to authoritative conclusions about a coach based simply on surface data that amounts to won-lost records with some of the worst Devils teams in franchise history and a relatively brief stint with a Predators organization that’s never been very good would be short sighted and precipitous. Wouldn’t it be worthwhile to slow down and learn more about Hynes before passing judgment? I’d certainly be interested in learning more about the guy…coaching history prior to Devils, coaching philosophy, systems, communication skills, ability to develop, etc.
I hope not, they should either go win someone who won before or a brand new coach.
