I like what Marner does, he's not a playoff leader perhaps but he can contribute in the regular season towards the final standings and home ice advantage. The penalty killing thing is really cool. The Leafs need a playoff closer, and Matthews isn't it. If they had someone who was more of a threat in a playoff game, Marner might get a little more space to do what he does best. I think the Matthews problem is more vexing than the Marner problem, and thanks for those insights into his 'hockey dad' by the way. I'd never heard or seen such video before and I'm a little saddened by it, while at the same time concluding that it's no big surprise a guy like Babcock didn't/couldn't connect with him.
I'm not a leaf fan and never will be! But this guy is the best player the leafs drafted since Windel Clark, I hope he stays!
One of the stupidest moves the team made was getting rid of Matt Martin. He was a great role model for Mitch. He was really toughening him up. Thats what he is missing as a good playoff player, balls. They traded Martin because of Babcock. They basically got a ham sandwich and an ice cream cone. This team pisses me off. All their toughness got traded awat or sent to the minors. They wonder why they get run over in the playoffs every year. Feckin loser beetches

I think he'll fear better on a team able to give him time and space like the regular season. Hard forecheck puts a lot of pressure skill players, Leafs don't create their own time and space, even a half second more players like Marner can find players to make highlight goals, but you don't get that when your in the playoffs and smart teams would make their TOI uncomfortable
Would the Leafs be better without MM, or AM, or WN, or JT, or MR? The answer is no to all of them. And they'll never win the trade that sends one or more of them out. On the night they were eliminated I thought, "Trade them all!" But having cooled off I think that they have to stick with these guys, but none can expect a massive raise. If that is what someone demands then they need to go. They finally did win a series, after all. Now they have to go further. Honestly I believe the pressure on all CDN teams is so great that none of them will ever win a Cup again, ever. So enjoy the regular season because that's all there will ever be.
Just imagine how much time and effort Leaf fans have spent trying to figure out what the team needs to do to succeed over the last fifty years.

I love Marner as a player. The problem is that if you are trying to get value to move aav to another position he's the only player you can do that with.
It's funny reading all these comments supporting this guy. I've seen all I need to see in the playoffs from both Mariner and Matthew's. They both gotta go, period. What more excuses are you gunna to concoct about the core? 4. I think I've heard all the excuses over their time here in Toronto. Everybody is touchable at the right price. These brats have been protected by Dubas and Keefe, cuddled like the spoiled brats they are. It's time for changes in Toronto, and it starts with those two.

Mitch is a very good player however there are 3 other players along with him that are probably overpaid. Infact so overpaid that the rest of the team is very weak. They have probably 3 good Defenseman out of 7. The other 4 are soft. They just don't have enough Cap space to get anyone else. In my opinion Mitch is the most valuable of the core 4 but should take a pay cut to help the team.

Mitch Marner is so Overrated & Overhyped in this video. It’s unbelievable! When a descent team like TML plays in the regular season they play more games against weak opponents such as Ottawa, Montreal, Buffalo all of which are. below .500. So maybe fans & media need to calm down their excitement. Having said that I believe Marner, Matthews & Nylander will remain with the club and JT will get moved instead!

I don’t understand why Marner is not playing center. He lit up the OHL as a center. And the way he drives play and facilitates, would be great at centre. I could also see Matthews thriving on the wing, as one of the best shooters in the game like Ovechkin. Anyway I wouldn’t mind if they traded him, Matthews and Nylander because they’re all overpaid ( Nylander will be overpaid next). You win with players outperforming their contracts (macKinnon) which is impossible at their salaries. As amazing as Marner and Matthews are, at the end of the day, they’re more or less point per game players which are worth between 7-10 million ( roughly a million per 10 points) If Matthews wants 13-15 million he’d have to score like 130, 150 points for it to be worth it. People are calling Tavares overpaid and a waste of money but he had 5 less points than Matthews and 4 less goals. Trade them all while their value is the highest because you have no other choice. You can’t pay Matthews 15 million, then Marner will ask for the same. Balance the lineup with cheaper players who have the potential to score 30. Let another team waste their cap overpaying Matthews.
