I don’t think I agree with Larry that Roy is *exactly* what this team needs, but he could be exactly what Laf needs… A fellow Kay-bec-kwah who has been getting the most out of young players for several years now. Maybe that’s enough.

  2. Wesley__Willis

Still think it’s weird and telling that reporting has Drury checking in on Roy as early as December 2022. Where there’s smoke…

  3. Here, here Brooksy. I think this would be a home run

  4. Pratius

Heeeelllll no. We really think the lunatic who ran a super talented Avs roster into the ground, threw a temper tantrum cuz he thought they traded his “best defenseman” *Nick Holden*, and quit on the eve of training camp due to a difference in team philosophy (which turned into Sakic’s vision making them one of the best teams in the league and winning them a Cup) is the answer??

Just hire Knoblauch already and stay away from these obvious tire fires.

Roy’s last two years in Colorado were disasters. It’s very different to coach kids in the QMJHL vs adults in the NHL.

I know this sub has been iffy on Laviolette from the beginning but he’s my number 1 choice if we want to get straight back to playoff race/cup contending.

Knoblauch would be my choice if we’re cool to sit back for a couple more years while Laf/Kakko develop.

Roy would be my preference over Hynes but idk about anyone else.

  6. TheSensation19

I heard someone say Patrick Roy should be the coach becuase of his success in the QMJHL.

You know who else had success their? Gallant.

Most NHL coaches have had success in the amateur leagues first.

Also, if the job of the NHL coaches esp in NY is that we need to “develop” Kakko and Laffy … then why would Drury trade for Tarasenko and Kane? Because it wasn’t the job to give these guys top 6 minutes. It was the job of the coach to win games.

  7. AdamFoxxx

I’m very confused on Roy. If my memory serves me right, he was a terrible coach in Colorado for his short tenure and the team just progressively got worse under him each year. He was always used as an example of how a great player doesn’t always make a great coach.

But then you look at his QMJHL record and it’s pretty fucking good, and his team just won the finals. Is Roy a good coach?

  8. JonnyGBuckets

I do think Larry makes a good point in that it’s generally a soft spoken bunch and a fiery HC who can get them going would make a lot of sense.

  9. KingJames_684

I’d take him over lavy and definitely hynes lol

  10. HideousControlNow

Roy is an egomaniac whose tenure in Colorado was a disaster. On what planet is he “exactly what the Rangers need”?

Patrick Roy dealing with the NY media would *not* go well.

  11. Signal_Wall_8445

No denying that Roy’s tenure in CO ended badly, but it is very strange that he had the title of HC and VP of Hockey Operations at the same time. It seems like something you would do if you specifically wanted there to be friction between the coach and GM.

Roy wouldn’t have been on my original list, but on a short list with Laviolette and Hynes I would take Roy’s passion and perceived lack of favoring veterans over the other two guys.

We have given out so many NMCs our veteran group is far too comfortable.

We may as well send a 4th round pick to Philly and bring back Torts if this is the route we want to go. Because Torts actually has achieved success in the league while being a stubborn asshole to players and media alike.

Mind you, I’m one of the few that likes Torts. He elevates younger players and he does have a system that works. Even last year, he did better in Philly than anyone deserved to. He had one horrid year in Vancouver when that ship was sinking.

Roy has all of the stubborn and none of the results.

  13. Stonewall30nyr

Oh fuck no. I can’t stand him as a coach, I think he’s terrible, and I’ll always hate him for starting the whole pulling the goalie with like 3 minutes left thing. Worst trend in hockey because you’ll never stop the other team for that long and if they score, you basically threw away the rest of that clock

  14. InternationalHunt738

Roy, Messier, Gretzky hire would be for the name and to sell additional seats. Roy less so then the other 2.

Knoblauch, Craig, and Kompon would be the hires if you wanted to develop and say win at the same time.

Lavioelette, Babcock, Sutter, would all be fall guys. Hired simple to take the heat when the team fails.

Messier or Gretzky will never happen because they could arguably take Drury’s job. No GM is hiring their own replacement/or can stand on the same level as them with the owner. Roy I think has matured in his coaching and can be the better long term fit. Just don’t know if he would sign with us.

Personally Quenneville is the right choice for a win now type of hire. Regardless of his status as a fall guy for Chicago and that PR nightmare. Unfortunately the people with money never take blame and he will be remembered as the guy who let it happen when I am pretty sure he brought the topic upstairs and they just told him to cover it up and move the guy. Doesn’t excuse him of fault but he was not the top domino. I don’t buy the media BS about it is all his fault and he shouldn’t be allowed to coach again. Quenneville checks too many boxes to not be the guy. It really does just come down to if the league will reinstate him and be willing to rehash some of that drama, having him so front and center in a major market.

What I think is the smart hire….Craig/Kompon…they have been assistants for a while…1 for vegas and the other for Maurice. Kompon probably doesn’t leave Maurice….which in turn leaves just craig or knob. And I guess if you go with an unknown you hire the one that is yours in knob…. it would be the rational choice…considering we are going to have a 1/4 of the team be AHL players next season.

I see Laviolette and those recycled guys as just fall guys for the next season. When we underperform he or whoever it is …..just gets fired and drury escapes the bullseye in the scope for one more season. But ultimately don’t kid yourself that he is not under pressure if Dolan is involved like people believe. It is why Lav or likes it the most likely outcome of this coaching search.

  15. yankeeuniverse

Imagine Roy’s temper and the New York media? Lol

  16. yankeeuniverse

Penguins just hired a new GM, if Sullivan gets fired, Druy’s gonna swoop in and hire him

  17. raspygatsby

Out of all the known candidates thus far. I’ll take Roy.

  18. TreeFugger69420

Roy bombed in his last NHL stint.

  19. Chiquitarita298

Avs fan here. He is not what you need. He is not what anyone needs.

When he left the Avs, his “exit” comprised of him throwing a giant hissy fit when Sakic wouldn’t trade Landeskog and then quitting less than a month before the season started.

As a chick, I hate using this adjective for people but it’s so true in this case. Patrick Roy is wayyyyyy too f*cking ~emotional~ to be a good head coach in the NHL (especially with some of the stronger personalities currently on the team, ie Kreids, Trouba, potentially Kane or Tarasenko, etc).

Roy is and always will be a legend for me. What he did for us as a player is extraordinary.

But he isn’t fit to be an NHL coach. He’s a bad coach because his “style” is “do what I say or else”. The Rangers are my second favorite team so please don’t make the same mistake my first favorite team did!

  20. Hohumbumdum

Love Roy. We should sign him as the backup tendy at league minimum.

  21. How does this coaching search keep getting worse? Has he done a good job coaching anywhere?

  22. MrDabollBlueSteppers

    I’d rather hire Kendall Roy

  23. private_liberty

He is what the Rangers need. There’s no better coach than him available.

  24. Wesley__Willis

What makes Roy a little different is that he isn’t really a retread. His only NHL go-round swung from exhilarating to exhausting in a hurry and since then he’s pretty much been an exemplary coach in the minors. You can find interesting accounts of players really liking him, like Marchessault. Maybe he’s evolved? Choosing a bombastic coach (even if a little reformed) is a weird choice for a team like this but I am a little swayed by the idea that this roster needs an ass kicker. This team – and it will be nearly identical next year – loafed themselves right out of a cup run and that’s unacceptable.

  25. owlsandbears

idk how anyone could think this was a good move

  26. BourbonSommelier

Patrick Roy coached the Avs for three seasons. He had one surprise good year and two bad ones. He’s not the answer. People need to get a grip.

  27. beerleaguer2

I’m for this, compared to what else is out there.

  28. TheRealDJLars

These soft fragile egos could never handle Roy. Panarin would be crying daily. 🍦🍞

  29. DrFrocktopus

Yea I don’t think Drury is going to go with another hard head after he just got rid of Gallant.

  30. I’m all for Roy. Let’s bring in a big personally and see what this team has. Keenan benched Brian fucking Leetch back in ’94. This team can stand a little tough love and if not, then we know everything we need to know about them.

  31. MH566220

…Non…. he’s Torts in French. There are still a lot of names floating out there and plenty of time to find the right guy.

Here’s another one that Brooks thinks the Rangers need. As I posted to Brooks on the Post site; Roy is going to fix all of the Rangers problems just like trading for Kane was going to fix all of the Rangers problems, right Brookies???

    He’s a schmuck.
