Tanner Jeannot looks to overcome big expectations in 2023-24 after lackluster 20-game stretch

One could make the case that Tanner Jeannot will be the most talked about player on the Tampa Bay Lightning going into the 2023-24 season. Jeannot arrived in Tampa Bay at the trade deadline after the Lightning exchanged Cal Foote and five future draft picks. Jeannot was not able to compensate the Bolts in his 20-game slate, but the expectations will be just as high as the young forward looks to show that he’s worth the haul and more in the upcoming season.

  1. I think in many ways it's a blessing Jeannot struggled this year, both in Nashville and in Tampa. It's going to push his AAV down and hopefully make him more willing to sign a deal with more term versus more AAV, ala Nick paul. Having multiple swiss army knife style players like that really helps with the cap situation, and will help a lot with the impending retool in the potential post Stamkos/Hedman era. Although I hope they both stay.

  2. The trade was awful when it was announced and it's just gonna look worse as time goes on.

And to be honest, there's no way Jeannot could justify the trade with his play. Even if he somehow became the second coming of Stamkos, he wouldn't be worth five draft picks.

  3. What made the trade a bit disappointing was that there was nothing/no one else coming back (future considerations, prospect player, maybe combine 2 picks for one higher or something) and, don't know if I'm alone on this, but at the point in the season when the trade happened it seemed like we maybe needed a defender instead of more forwards, considering how the team was struggling after the all-star break. And to top it off when he finally had a couple of decent games in a row and looked like he was finally fitting into some sort of role in the team – blam! Injury. Hopefully he can completely adjust to the team next season to really see what he brings in.
