They haven't tried to much. Being a joke of a team in the 90's really hurt their reputation. Playing in a dilapidated arena for years. They've been fairly successful in the past five years but who wants to play a grinding trap/defensive style

excuses.
-no one wants to play in outdated arena.
-isles play second fiddle to rags who get the big stars.
-lousy cheap ass ownership that wouldn't spend $$$'s to win.
-lousy ass gm's like maloney, milbury leading to 15 years of futility/3 playoff berths/0 playoff wins..
-high cost of living/taxes in nyc area drive top f a's to fla., tx. with no income tax.
-an old fossilized 20th century gm who doesn't have a clue how to play 21st century nhl making nyi an undesirable team to play for.
-too many teams-32-to compete for top ufa talent. You have to have selling appeal to lure today's ufa's.
remedies that didn't work.
-playoff success under lou/trotz for the first time in almost 30 years which would make nyi appealing spot to win for ufa's unlike past.
-shiny new arena a bonus that was going to lure top talent to nyi. Couldn't even keep cornerstone p j judas on nyi.
-proven winner/dinosaur lou was gonna lure top f a talent to nyi despite lou's rules and reliance on old buddies from former teams. the only guys that will re-sign with lou who doesn't give a fk about drafting/skill.
bottom line.
-if bow tie doesn't build team from scratch in a then 16 team nhl using draft (potvin 12 win first season '73 prize first piece, '74 was gold), patience, and timely trades (despite frugal owner boe) plus hiring al as coach leading to dynasty nyi probably doesn't exist today.
-And the only way to become a winner once again is to follow that plan and build thru the draft use patience with timely moves that put a competitive 21st century team players want to play on on the ice. no other recourse for isles. They are what they are. A second fiddle in their market team with no national appeal like an original six team or like habs and leafs are in canada with the success of the dynasty too long ago to matter. reality is L I was only added to nhl to keep rival wha out of coli. If not for that and needing another team to add with atl. flames isles could have been L I blades or ny knights and drowned out with the rest of the wha.

It's Lou's fault for not having cap space.
I would offer less than average drafts as a solid culprit to explain this teams lack of success, When was the last homegrown player to make some noise?, Trades are the main supplier of win now talent but it would seem our GMs since Al Arbour… (all bow)… have been under achievers until Lamirillo, But he is stuck in time and IMHO it has passed him bye….This group peaked in the loss to Tampa in the seventh game conference game in 21 and should have begun a youth movement then….That whined… Thinking positively, the younger players will improve and the team will enjoy a season of reasonable health. Barzal…Horvat and Nelson will center their own lines and fill out the roster from that starting point….Go Islanders!!!
