Leafs should've signed Perry in free agency years ago, just another one of Duba's many poor choices.
Sure, sign Perry and then use him to convince Darryl Sittler to come out of retirement.

If he’s willing to a sign on the cheap what makes you think he wouldn’t just do the same in Tampa & live in Florida rather than up root his family & move to Toronto.He made a living playing & living in Anaheim & Dallas then Tampa.A team from the southern climate who would offer him a low salary would probably me much more alluring to retire to.

I like Jay, but don't agree with all his takes on things Leaf. Having Perry this spring would've changed nothing. The Leafs don't need another player at the end of his career. Giordano was solid through the regular season, but seemed slower & less effective in the post-season. Toronto outplayed Florida in at least 3 of their 5 games & totally outplayed Florida in games 2 & 5, but Bob had morphed into Vezina Bob & even when Leaf shooters beat him on HD chances they were hitting posts & crossbars. By my count, over the 5 games, I believe Toronto hit at least 11 goalposts & 7 crossbars. Assuming only 2 or 3 of those of those iron shots went in, likely a different outcome……or maybe not.
Having limped into the playoffs by one point, enabled by the face-planting Penguins, Florida, courtesy of Bobo being on fire, has made the final. Shit happens when your 'tender goes on an epic heater. Carolina outplayed Florida most of the 4 games, but Bob is absolutely THE primary reason for the massive upset. Red hot goalies have been the reason lesser teams have made to the Cup finals from time to time & in some cases, actually won. This year, it's Bobrovsky who has excelled beyond all expectations. Conn Smythe regardless what happens.
Perry has been prolonging his career for glory now for a few years. It isn’t about money to him though it certainly doesn’t hurt.
Before Kyle Dubas was let go by Shanny, Dubas preferred skilled players who can score and he didn’t sign the sand paper players who played physical and can drop the gloves. With the rare exception of Wayne Simmonds, Dubus could have traded for Pat Maroon, Corey Perry and Ryan Reaves.
