At No. 8 in our prospect countdown for 2022, we have the incredibly skilled Matvei Petrov.
The Oilers selected Petrov in the sixth round of the 2021 NHL Draft and he’s exploded as a prospect since. In his first season in the OHL, he scored 40 goals and 90 points, among the best production for an 18-year-old in the league.
If he can round out his game away from the puck, Petrov is a fair bet to wind up being one of the steals of his draft class.

Great video. All valid points and to add further, Petrov simply did not get scouted enough in North Bay. It’s a small northern Ontario town that often gets overlooked, they have a great program that puts emphasis on a 200ft hardworking style of play. The last Russian to go 1st in the import was Svechnikov, you’d think there would be a little more interest. Keep an eye on North Bay this year, they’re in for a big year with a lot of returnees and great draft picks throughout the past few OHL drafts. Also NB led the OHL in players drafted to the NHL this past draft with 5 players.
