  1. The cutoff of 15 years for first overalls that have won the cup is kind of sneaky, given that all five of the #1s in the years before Stamkos have all won at least one. I mean, 15 years kinda makes sense, but the entire lockout era , which just add 5 more for a nice round 20 makes more, and including Fleury in the lockout era makes sense because he was still a rookie after the lockout and he is still active…but then the number of #1 picks with cups shoots up from 2 of 15 (13%) to 7 of 20 (35%).

J/K. You could have set it as just one of the last 10 and it still would have made sense. Though it is also true that 10 of the last 15 Stanley Cups have been won by a lockout era #1 pick.

I think the Oilers will get there. They were in the WCF last year, just happened to run into the juggernaut that was the Avs that year. This year they looked even better, but it didn't work out. I agree that D and G are the sore spots, but I am not sure they NEED a #1D…I think a solid group of 3x #2s and #3/4s would be plenty. Goal is tricky, but the Avs showed that you don't have to have a stud between the pipes to win, it just takes a team in front that can limit chances against, and score at will (that part EDM has). The scoring of the entire forward group is fine, just need more commitment to team D from them…top to bottom every shift. Defense needs to limit mistakes, add a couple good defenders (even at the expense of offense).

As far as McDavid garnering the biggest trade haul in NHL history….going to be hard to beat the Lindros trade.

  2. How can McDavid be the best of all time by putting up records reminiscent of Gretzky and Lemieux? Wouldn't the greatest of all time have to be breaking those already set records. Sure McDavid is the best in the league currently but he will never be the best player of all time plain and simple.

  3. I mean look closer at the McDavid chart.

Yes as a whole the goaltending was better before McDavid, but it was much better than their average his first couple years and cratered after. Why? It's obvious: his ELC ended. Some guys (McDavid, Tavares, Matthews) want to be the highest paid player to prove their worth. They are entitled to that right.

Winners like Crosby and Stamkos leave some room to build afford their squadmates. Edmonton cannot afford to fill out a blueline and crease when they are paying what, $30+mil between three guys. Draisaitl took a cut, Connor didn't get the memo and his legacy is suffering for it. I'm not saying Connor doesn't deserve the money, but by taking the money he deserves the losing. If he cut that $12.5mil to $10mil (still higher than Sid, Mac and Draisaitl), that $2.5mil/year is the difference between Brett Kulak and Shea Theodore, or Kailer Yamamoto and Adrian Kempe.

It sucks that Connor has to do it himself, but he chose this path. Crosby, Ovechkin and Stamkos all could've reset the market on their second or third contracts, they all chose to win instead.

  4. Stop being stupid. Did you honestly say that McDavid could be the greatest player ever and that his numbers compare to Gretzky and Lemieux? Are you aware of how many points he will have to average to just get close to Gretzky? Do the math. Stop spouting nonsense.

  5. Trading Eberle was a big mistake. And how about the Leafs not drafting a #1 defenceman? Liljegren, Sandin, and nobody who can lead. Ugh. At least the Oilers had Klefbom.

  6. Edmonton just expected way too much from Skinner. He definitely has the potential to be their star goalie to finally take them to the promise land, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a comeback next season, but only time will tell.

  7. Give literally any other team mcdavid and so many top 10 picks, they'd have a dynasty. As a flames fan I'm glad for the incompetent management that's held them back forever.

  8. So when you reference 2014 you’re saying they should have drafted a goalie instead of Leon…?

  9. Still boggles my mind that not picking goalies became a draft strategy for so long in the modern era… in large part due to ONE guy. A legend in his own way.

  10. Edmonton floundering their embarrassment of riches for over a decade will never stop being funny.
That being said… It almost feels inevitable that McDraistaitl will drag them over the hump eventually.
Also those Hyman and Nugent-Hopkins contracts look like pure genius in hindsight.

  11. Drop Mcdavid and get several worthwhile players. They don't have the depth or the goaltending to win a cup as things stand.

  12. I don’t think McDavid or Matthews leave Canada, but they are gonna get contracts that make their ownership groups wince in pain. Realistically they can’t get paid more anywhere else (other than maybe Chicago), so why not just milk the team for every penny you possibly can? It might seem improbable, but these guys have a chance at generating generational wealth in large part due to their talent and unlike Johnny Gaudreau I don’t think either of the big M’s are gonna run off to Ohio.

  13. "In an era where defensive strategies have never been so structured" I mean 5 years ago maybe. But no longer. This year had the lowest average goal tending numbers the league has seen since the late 80's. The leagues made it constantly harder and harder to defend and easier and easier to score. Goalie gear shrinking, obstruction, removing of the redline. Goalies not being able to play the puck just anywhere, any stick near the gloves being automatic penalties. And that's not to mention the stick tech. No right now it's probably the easiest era to score goals in that the leagues ever seen. There's a reason why we had multiple guys break 60 and why so many players scored 100+ points this year. It aint cause defensive schemes are amazing.

  14. lmao
the one mistake was not giving up your top talent forwards for a top talent goalie. Dont want to lose mcdavid? dont want to lose draisaitl? then you don't want to win a cup. enjoy the early golf again, boys.

  15. Despite the Oilers 4 first overall picks, they actually weren't that lucky, they weren't winning the 1st overall pick at the right time (excluding McDavid of course), like I mean, they won the first overall pick when Yakupov, Hall, and Nuge were the projected 1st overalls, you got to also get lucky with when you win 1st overall picks, and the Oilers couldn't get that luck until McDavid. And their late round drafting was also pretty damn unlucky. The Oilers have been paying back their debt to the hockey gods ever since the 80s, and that shows with their recent drafting.

  16. Love the new format .. Glad you're back .. And as an Edmontonian and an Oilers fan, I can only say (with a tear in my eye) very well said, sir ..

  17. The only mistake the oilers made was being from Edmonton, the NHL doesn't want a Canadian team winning the Stanley cup there isn't enough money in it for them. I'm from Chicago and i would love to see Canada bring the cup home even though im a hawks & Avs fan.

  18. Maybe they need a massive shakeup. I'm thinking of something along the lines of sacrificing one of their top 6 for star power on the back end and useful pieces for the bottom six. Maybe the Nuge can get them exactly that in return. Maybe Tampa Bay could be a good dance partner for that. At this point, maybe it's not a good idea to accept just anything but if I were Chiarelli I'd be listening to anything, who knows, there could be an interesting offer in there.

  19. WE THE VANCOUVER CANUCKS WOULD LIKE TO TRADE OUR WHOLE TEAM FOR CONNOR MCDAVID. PLEASE AND THANK YOU

  20. Get ready Oilers fans. Mcdavid is leaving. Why stay with a franchise that can't sign a free agent or draft to save its life? No coach, No goalie, No depth on fwd or def. He will leave and win somewhere that knows how to build an actual team. Oilers will get nothing because they won't trade him. Gonna lose him for nothing. Enjoy LMAO.

  21. No team has done more to harm emerging hockey markets in the last 10 years than the Oilers constant sucking and hording of 1st round picks.

  22. Being an Oilers fan and seeing the 2016 draft class kills me. I remember watching it and screaming for them to take Matthew Tkachuk. Everyone was saying we needed grit and physicality and yet we didn't take a freaking Tkachuk. I know that Pool party had massive upside, especially after the world juniors, but my goodness to this day it still hurts. Also seeing the depth that draft class had.. ugh..
P.S I know how dang lucky we are to have Leon and Connor, just saying, sometimes it stings.

  23. Skinner cost them everything, coach should be fired trying to play skinner every damn horrible game. He sucks in playoffs, Cambell woulda won it for them.

  24. The blue line needs tear down and rebuild. Defense and goal tending has sucked for a long time now.
