  1. Wow!! This is so inspiring and absolutely smooth. Rick, you have a heart of gold and true demonstration of passion for The Art Of Jiujutsu. Thank you! From Phoenix, Arizona. 🙂

  2. Man, much respect! I’m late in replying lol but this is such an awesome vid and motivation for me!

  3. Tech demo was such a smooth stuff. And the production quality of these vids is awesome. Great job all!

  4. Rick I follow you ! You’re an inspiration for me and I enjoyed your journey ! I’m a 2nd stripe white belt and I’m 53! So, watching and following your channel I have learned a lot ! Please keep it going as I look forward for more videos ! TYVM

  5. Dude that technical demonstration was absolutely insane. That blue belt grappling dummy getting tapped into oblivion. This is like every submission in BJJ condensed down into the space of 5-10 minutes. Great video. As a 27 year-old blue belt, this is where I want to be when I'm 50+.

  6. I am 34 years old blue belt and 5'3", my short height is my strength.
Anytime I roll with big and young energetic guys, I get only one comment, and that is, "I am very strong". I am amazed they never appreciate my technique but strength! I never let my age and height as weakness. And it's the truth that tall guys when gets old, it's kinda hard for them to be proficient athletically contrary to shot guys.
    Anyhow love these videos.

  7. ´m a jiu-jitsu (japanese) student (3rd degree black belt) from germany. i like the traditional ceremony at the end of the belt promotion. it makes it very special and great. Roy Dean, keep up the good work, you have very good students!

  8. Professor Dean,
Your best demo in my opinion. This man is insanely technical. Also, thank you for the behind the scene glimpse of you off the mat with your student. They love and appreciate you, and will go to war at a moment’s notice.

  9. Honored to be part of the soundtrack to this video – amazing talent and way to rock it on the mat!

  10. Anyone that has to be the "nail" (the blue belt) for that many techniques should get a free rashguard or Gi.. . .or maybe after getting smashed each time you earn points eventually allowing you to purchase some academy bjj swag.. . . and anyone that has to run that gauntlet. . . is probably in for a treat!!!

  11. While every one of these promotion films is inspiring, watching Rick just leave everything on the mat? Holy smokes, heart of the warrior. Inspires this 50 year old blue belt to keep going.

  12. That’s what you call a “Plethora” of submissions! I’m new to BJJ after accomplishing a 4th degree black belt in American Kenpo under Bill Packer. Mr Ellis and his videos are inspiring and insightful for me as a near 40 year old beginner in BJJ. Truly a blessing to have a place to come watch videos and get some knowledge and motivation from someone of his caliber. OSS!

  13. I'm facing Old Men challenges now. I'll be 52 this year and I'm approaching Brown Belt. I started BJJ at 38 and had to stop for a while due to family obligations. I restarted a few years ago and made Purple. As typical of this rank, I tossed my old "game" and begun to rethink my approach to the art. Although I have made some successes, I'm noticing the extreme difficulties of excelling against bigger opponents, and younger opponents. I just don't have the energy I used to – I take easier to pressure, and my timing is – well – poor for what a purple belt should be. Despite stretching, strength training, and endurance training – I just don't have the edge anymore. Add to it arthritis (I get shots in my hands, wrists, knees, and shoulders), and two herniated discs (also get shots for that), and I'm struggling. The other day an 18yo white belt joined the gym. He wrestled for 3 years and dances all over me. He can't tap me – and I've only tapped him once, but he gets mount almost every time he tries and I struggle to reverse position. I could go on – but I'm sure you understand. Thank you so much for sharing your journey. It gives me hope that I can still achieve Black Belt at some point. The road is just going to be a little harder.
