What is Jack Rathbone's ceiling?
I was very impressed with his game last night. Aside from the inevitable penalty he took, he had a solid game. I can imagine him being a solid top 4 behind Hughes within the next year or two, and a solid placeholder until he signs. If he continues his strong play, maybe Hughes will sign for slightly less in order to not be replaced (big maybe… still quite unlikely that it will affect his contract).
Rathbone just leap past Joulevi in the pecking order
If the Canucks really cannot sign both Patterson and Hughes, swap Hughes with Dahlin from Buffalo or even to New Jersey for Nico Hischier. Very soon coming up, the future left D's for the Canucks would be OEL, Rathbone, and Jurmo. Let Quinn play with his brothers in NJ. The Canucks will then have extra ordinary strong in the centremen positions if the swap NJ really happened. I think I left messages before if two very similar small but great skating and intelligent defencemen in the same team would be duplicated. Then, trading away a 1A to get back another 1A assets will benefit even more on other positions.
Haven't seen the roster yet, but I hope Calgary dresses a veteran lineup which would provide a better test for the Canucks. Not sure what Rathbone's ceiling is, but I think he can play above his weight class if he's given more ice time. If Hughes misses some time, it might be Rathbone's proving ground if he takes on some of those minutes. Thanks Clay!

Rathbone is a Jared Spurgeon/Ray Ellis type player. Small but with tremendous skills and on the power play and edge work to get out of trouble and hand out the 1st pass out of the defensive zone. Rathnone looks to be a gem!
