You don't always need the star players to win just look at the three remaining teams in the playoffs. Germany didn't have Leon Draisaitl or Philipp Grubauer who could have made a difference.
As long as the NHLPA is holding the Olympics hostage, I consider the Championships the ultimate hockey tournament, and as such Latvia is currently the #3 hockey country in the world.

Even know other countries Swiss,Germany,Latvia,USA have grown in hockey alot Canada has alot of depth.
I wish they would let players go to Olympics best on best and have russia there. It's not fair or a worthy medal if your leaving out Ovi,Vasilevskiy,Sorokin, Shesterkin,kucherov,Panarin,Sergachev,kaprizov,Provorov,Tarasenko ect can't play.
IIHF WC's might not be the most prestigious tournaments but it does atleast give the lesser Canadian and American players that otherwise would not get a chance to play on a best vs best rosters a chance to represent their country.
It almost seems like an embarrassment to the NHL and Stanely Cup that guys can go and play hockey for about 2-3 weeks and win a Gold Medal lifetime achievement….whereas you play 8 months of hockey and grueling playoffs to win nothing.

It's a tournament that Canada should be sending "B" players. Either young guys who haven't established themselves or older guys at the end of their careers to bring in leadership. Having some idiot like Ryan Smyth play in this over and over again was embarassing.
"This isn't Canada's A B C or even D team" I'd go as far as Z team. lol. Yay, I guess. I forget the tournament was even on. World Jrs is a bigger deal here.
Congrats to all players, coaches and staff on the win; especially the coaches. It shows you don't have to have a top-flight team of superstars to win. That's good. While Crosby 87 et al chose not to participate, that's okay. It gives others who would not otherwise have the chance to participate and possibly be of use for future international competition. A win-win for Canada on multiiple levels.
