Hard to say. I’d say we’ve seen the best of Marner, but not the best from Hughes. I like them both. They are both foundational players. Basically untradeable unless they demand a trade.

I’d have to say Mitch

Marner is one of the best players in the regular season. Yet he is average and sometimes a liability in the playoffs. He coughed up a ridiculous number of turnovers this playoffs, and this type of folding in the playoffs is a multi year pattern. My goal for my team is to win the Stanley Cup and it’s not to place first or second in the division in the regular season. So I don’t think Marner fits my vision for the Leafs….. trade him.

Marner if you don’t want to go on a playoff run

Quinn.

where’s Cale?

I’d probably take Quinn just because it’s harder to find offensive D who can control the play more

Too hard
I want Dean Youngblood

This is such an odd comparison. I’d personally go Hughes because you can’t find a high scoring defenseman with ease, but once again, this comparison is so weird for a couple of reasons:
– 2015 (4OA) draft vs 2018 (7OA) draft – Forward vs Defenseman – Different teams – Neither has a expiring contract – Different salaries – One has seen playoffs in his prime, the other has not – One plays on a team with other incredible forwards, the other plays on a team where he’s the only defenseman

Marner all day.

Marner, not even close. He is a play driving winger and there aren’t many of those in the league. I would say he is top 5 at his position in the league. Can’t say that about Hughes although he is real good.
Also I am a fan of Quinn, wished we took him in 18 over Zadina.
m_ghesquiere
As a devils fan as juicy as collecting all 3 Hughes would be it’s probably Marner with our current roster.
superdalebot
Hughes makes 7.85 for 4 more years Marner makes 10.9 for 2 more years
For this reason I’d take Hughes but if they had the same contract I’d still take Hughes. Generational D man is way more important than a guy on a milk carton come playoffs
Funky_Horse_0211
I get why people wouldn’t want Quinn but I feel like I’d need to see him on a better team to make a clear call. Like if he was on the canes, or the stars, or any number of teams

Neither. Both are soft and not built for playoff hockey
DeyCallMeTimmy2shoes
Hughes all day. Harder to find scoring defensemen than overpaid forwards

i would want me to play in the nhl thatd be cool i think
Lightz29
This is a pretty hard pick because although we haven’t seen much of Quinn in the playoffs, he’s played incredible scoring 16 points in 17 games, but Mitch on the other hand can have consistent high scoring seasons (not saying Quinn can’t but yk)

Marner. Not close.

Yeah…don’t compare a forward and a defenseman.
As an Isles fan, Hughes is definitely more what they need than Marner. But that’s not saying he’s better than Marner. Just a puck moving offensive defenseman and PP QB is just what the doctor ordered as far as team need is concerned.

I would take Hughes, we’d actually have a defenseman at that point….

Marner because the Oilers are bleeding in the RW position

As leafs fans, it’s easy for us to say Hughes because of the whole “grass is always greener” thing, especially with the bitter taste left in our mouth following mitch the magician’s disappearing act in the playoffs… Not meaning to single him out (he wasn’t the only no-show in Rd 2) but the post is about him…
But the logical reason I’d pick Hughes is that a defenseman of his caliber completely shifts the trajectory of a franchise that is so imbalanced in talent between the forward and defence core.
Marner’s presence is nearly irreplaceable though, I’d hate to see him go – but if I could keep Matthews and nylander and gain Quinn Hughes… I’d probably have to say that I’d be comfortable with that tradeoff.
The funny thing is that if I were a neutral franchise that currently has neither of these two guys, I might actually take marner. It’s an odd poll posted here, kind of a weird comparison to make, but it turned out to be pretty interesting to contemplate.

Marner… it’s not even a competition…

Depends what the rest of my team looks like. One of the best playmakers and wingers in the league or one of the best defencemen in the league.
I feel like they’re too different to compare. You would never be in a position where your team needs both but you have to choose one. I guess I would give a slight edge to Hughes because it’s a little harder to find good defencemen than it is to find good wingers? That’s not a very good reason though
