How would you feel about a goaltending change?

Reading the Athletic’s article on 7 teams that should trade for John Gibson and though the Blues are not mentioned it got me thinking. Would you be okay with a trade of something like Binnington, Scandela, and one of the late firsts for John Gibson? He’s got 4 years left on his deal but his AAV is slightly lower than Binner’s. Plus he’s undoubtedly an upgrade. My thinking is if we’re locked in on D maybe we upgrade the G and hopefully his veteran experience helps Hofer grow into a true #1. The Blues have had success with aging goalies before so I think it would be an interesting move.

What are Anaheim fans’s thoughts on the offer of Binnington, Scandella, and a late 1st for John Gibson

I love these trade proposals that involve the preferred team packaging up all the unwanted baggage and dumping it on a team that’s eager to trade

Regardless of what binnington is or isn’t – the problem is the reanimated corpse that is the D-Lines that run in and out every night.

Fair point, I shouldn’t have included Scandela. How about your choice of Krug, Faulk, or Parayko? Does that make more sense? I’m not an NHL scout the point of my question is would you be interested in bringing John Gibson to the Blues

If you watched or listened to all 82 games you would know that really the majority of the losses were not due to binner. It was due to bad -D play, no offense, lack of hustle for the forwards back checking

Goaltending is fine. I would rather just fix the biggest issue – defense.

I know what 50 can do between the pipes with a decent defense.

I also know even the best goaltenders of all time would have had a down year with as bad as our D played this year. That one game against the Ducks where we gave up like 20+ shots IN THE SLOT – there was no defense lol just a goalie doing his best to mitigate the damage. And that was par for the course this past year.

    Please fix the defense. Please.

I love Gibson but idk how much of an upgrade it is long term. He’s older than Binnington and a goalie change won’t fix our defense which is a huge part of the GAA issue.

Have always loved Gibson but don’t think he makes sense for us while we’re retooling for the next couple of years. He’s older than Bin and would take too many assets right now that we need to build around. I don’t think Binnington will be the goalie of our future, but at the same time neither is Gibson.

  9. Gibson looked cooked last year. No thanks.

My out of LF goaltender swap is Markstrom for Binnington.

Gibson is washed, he hasn’t looked good since he signed that contract (and yes I understand, the team he is on has been bad).

I wouldn’t consider giving up any positive assets for him period. He hasn’t been anywhere near worth his 6.4m cap hit.

EDIT: Just looked, his cap hit is even higher than Binnington. Makes even less sense in that case

I truly think Husso was the better netminder. I’ll never be convinced otherwise. Blues drops a huge deal on Binner, what like 36 mil? Then the second in line goaltender beat him out and got screwed over. Don’t even worry about arguing with me because Ville was all around better. People are still in love with 2018-2019 BenNasty but that’s coming up on 5 years ago…

Gibson would be great, he’s already got experience minding the net behind a shitty defense.

But like a lot of people are saying it’s our defense we need to change. In my mind, it doesn’t matter if we’ve got Gibson, Hart, Hellebuyck, or freaking Roy in his prime, our defense needs some changes. Hopefully the defense gets fixed by a new d-coach coming in as a fresh voice and vision for the boys to play around.

I don’t think Anaheim goes for that, but I think we need to be open to the idea of moving on from Binnington. I know a lot of people think Binnington is not the problem or that he’s fine, and there’s some truth to that but…this is exactly why a lot of contenders like Colorado and Vegas do goaltending on the cheap. The vast majority of NHL goalies are at least able to make the saves you expect them to make when you put a decent team in front of them, and when you are a very good team, that’s all you need. You’re better off filling your net with cheap 1A/1B types who are solid unless you’ve got an unreal goalie like Vasilevskiy or Shesterkin. I think you could get the goaltending Binnington gives you from a goalie making less, and they almost certainly wouldn’t be under contract for 4 years if they hit a rough patch. Same thing with Gibson…is that extra $400k a year that huge of upgrade over Binnington? Does that get the Blues in the playoffs? Or would the Blues be better off with an average goalie making 3 or $4 million a year and spending that money in other areas of the roster?

Is it just me, or am I the only one that thinks Binnington is still the the guy?

Even if we had Ullmark, Sorokin, or Hellebuyck this year in place of Binnington. What are we thinking? We would’ve won 2-3 extra games?

Binnington is fine. We’ve witnessed what he can do in goal when he’s got a great defense in front of him; that’s a huge reason why we won the Cup in 2019.

These past couple of seasons we had a very shaky defense, and that shows. It all started when we lost Bouw and Pietrangelo.
