I don’t like that he’s being traded in division, but I’m just happy he’s getting his deal. Columbus seems like they’re really trying to take a swing this year. They better honor him when we plays in Jersey again.

Too much money for the term. Maybe 6.25 x 4 years if you’re valuing him at that much yearly. I’d put him around maybe 4.75- 5mil. He will be 36 when this contact expires. Woof.

If it’s in division, that probably means the return will be slightly better. This is pretty creative actually, instead of trading the rights Columbus gets their coveted free agent (probably best of this UFA class) and an extra year.
So the question is: what does an extra year and guarantee UFA at an acceptable price cost?

Columbus got the pick in a 3-team deal with Seattle and Calgary where Seattle got Oliver Bjorkstrand (from Columbus) and Calgary got Calle Jarnkrok (from Seattle) along with some other draft picks swapping hands between the three teams.

It’s bittersweet in a way. Glad that he got paid big time and is set up financially for life but on the other hand, he endured through the worst decade of Devils hockey perhaps, and just when it seems like this team will be good for a while, he won’t be here for it.
Read the headline fast and thought we locked him up ourselves. This makes more sense.
Looking at Columbus on CapFriendly, that’s a crowded right side. Now they have Gubranson, Peeke, Boqvist, AND Severson. It looks like Boqvist had some injury problems? But the other two played over 70 games each last year.
Getting a 3rd for a guy who was gone is an absolute steal.
Severson has been the only constant in this team since I started following the NHL again. If I could afford a jersey, it would have been his. Gonna miss him.
Wow, what a payday. I imagine heavily frontloaded. Sevo was a divisive figure in his time with the Devils but it’s sad he was with our team through some truly terrible years and now doesn’t get to reap the full rewards of the rebuild.
Also food for thought, a certain someone in Tampa named Ross Colton was a Devils fan growing up they can’t keep perhaps.

Columbus really is trying to get better. It was a disaster of a season last year they can’t repeat. They looked not only bad but incompetent in the games the Devils played them.
However, it won’t matter for shit if they get horrific goaltending again.

Good for Damon. I genuinely like him but I don’t overrate him the way most of the fans on here seem to. He’s a good defenseman who has some great tools and will make a great play one game or do some dumb shit and wreck 3-4 games a year. He gets his top 4 minutes (at least for the next couple years) and gets big $$, we get a pick we wouldn’t have gotten (likely early 3rd round) and Columbus gets an inconsistent wildcard of a player who will show up aces some nights and turds some others and with a contract will hamper their cap for the next 8 years.
Devils were never going to be able to swing $6.25M AAV. Severson was loyal for years. Happy he gets paid.
Weird he didn’t just wait a month and hit the open market. Maybe the devils were able to get him better deal than an agent would be able to get him? Convinced CBJ to pay now rather than have the unknown of what the market will bear later?
