If the Habs and all the team in the top 5 skip on the guy it's because they have reasons to do so.
Habs fans are too hyped about the possibility of him becoming a Habs and they don't see the huge risk it would be.
If we pick him and in 2026 he doesn't come, the same people that said to take him will probably be mad. Leonard could well be a point per game player no point taking that huge of a risk with Michkov for 20 more points a season.

Obviously if Matvei Michkov gives the green light and will play for the Habs once his contract expires, you have to take him! However, if there's doubts whether it's contractual or character Ryan Leonard is going to be a very good player and would be the right pick!
If I were Hughes, I'd check with Arizona what their position on Michkov is. Given they'd be crazy about him, I'd try to get the 6th and 12th picks that the Coyotes have. I'd offer the 5th, Florida's 1st (31st or 32nd). Calgary's 1st in 24, plus Kidney, Struble and Norlinder. We'd end up with two of Leonard, Moore, Dvorsky, Perreault, Benson, Reinbacher or Sandin-Pellika. One can dream….
At 5 realistically my picks are michkov, Leonard, Benson. Or if someone picks michkov before Smith would be my first choice but all that said personally with all the I don't know or uncertainty up in the air I would try to be positive and pick michkov but I think it's a very hard decision with the idea of wasting the 5th overall in this draft. I would be very happy with any of the four players I mentioned go habs go

I wouldn't pick him. More chances of shit happening, from injuries, to war recruitment, to political conflicts from the war, to him not developing as well in Russia, to him staying over there, renew contract, yiddy yadda bullshit matters.

And why would they have any "confirmation". Nothing is set in stone for nobody, especially not for an 18 years old in a country chasing a war. Especially if that country is Russia. Nothing will be guaranteed. Don't do it.
Michkov+Caufield is insane, if he comes over, you have him at his ELC till 24, however, having Caufield, drafting another small player isn't ideal and I don't think they can wait 3 years. I think they will take Leonard or Benson as they already have a boat-load of D prospects.
I know you're all clever and dialed in…. but its not at all complicated. Russian boxers are still boxing, they just don't get to do it under their flag. For the most part Russia is pretending everything is normal. And it only takes Large Financial incentives on the part of Sports leagues, to normalize everything for the west. It doesn't make sense for Hockey Russia to not send people to the big show… they have a legacy in NHL too. At the end of the day, no one wants to solve this by punishing individual athletes.
If Smith or Michkov is available, you pick either, i really don't see why Michkov, would want to stay in the KHL instead of playing in the NHL, his dream is to play in the NHL.
