Well, this is a huge rumour. Today we’re focusing more on the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, and the big dog at the top off the food chain, Alexis Lafrenière of the Rimouski Océanic. However, today we’re talking about Lafrenière not as the big dog of the draft, but instead, as a potential 2nd or maybe even 3rd overall pick, depending on what the teams in the draft think.

The rumour comes out of AJ Jakubec, who, earlier on twitter, spoke about the notion on how some NHL teams that are currently in the play-in series for the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs may potentially have Quinton Byfield of the Sudbury Wolves or Tim Stützle of the Adler Mannheim at the 1st overall spot, over Alexis Lafrenière.

This is significant because the 1st overall spot in the draft belongs to an unnamed play-in series team, and most of the teams in this stage of the 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs actually have the option to get their 2020 first round pick into that slot for themselves.

The 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs will involve eight already-confirmed teams, which are the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, and Philadelphia Flyers in the East, and the Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Blues, Vegas Golden Knights, and Dallas Stars in the West. The remaining teams will fight in qualifying play-in series. The matchups will be the Chicago Blackhawks against the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames against the Winnipeg Jets, Arizona Coyotes against the Nashville Predators, Vancouver Canucks against the Minnesota Wild, Columbus Blue Jackets against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins against the Montreal Canadiens, Carolina Hurricanes against the New York Rangers, and the Florida Panthers against the New York Islanders.

The current NHL rankings for the 2020 NHL Draft go as follows:

1st) Undetermined team
2nd) Los Angeles Kings
3rd) Ottawa Senators (via San Jose Sharks)
4th) Detroit Red Wings
5th) Ottawa Senators
6th) Anaheim Ducks
7th) New Jersey Devils
8th) Buffalo Sabres.

The draft is stacked with guys like Alexis Lafrenière at the top, with Quinton Byfield, Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti, Jake Sanderson, and Yaroslav Askarov rounding out the top 10. The rest of the draft has a ton of great talent as well, like Anton Lundell, Kaiden Guhle, Dawson Mercer, Braden Schneider, Dylan Holloway, Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary, Justin Barron, Jack Quinn, John-Jason Peterka, William Wallinder, Rodion Amirov, Jacob Perreault, Seth Jarvis, Ty Smilanic, Jeremie Poirer, Noel Gunler, Mavrik Bourque, Lukas Reichel, Tyler Kleven, Ridly Greig, Justin Sourdif, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jake Neighbours, Luke Tuch, Helge Grans, Jan Mysak, Michael Benning, and Antonio Stranges.

The former NHL Draft Lottery odds, went in order as the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks (Senators), Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes (Devils), Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks (Devils), Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs (Hurricanes), Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders (Senators), Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes (Rangers), Pittsburgh Penguins (Wild), Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning (Sharks), Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins (Ducks).

  1. If I had no 1 . I would pick Laf and trade him to Detroit for Rossi and there no 1 pick next year.

  2. In my mind Lafrenière and Byfield are on the same tier so I could see that happening.

But I can't justify taking Stützle over Lafrenière in any way shape or form. As far as I'm informed, there is only two player in the first tier this coming draft.

  3. laf's knee injury does worry me. but i still dont see him dropping out of #1. i still see the draft going laf, byfield, stutz. until you get to #4, its probably pretty set. ottawa could throw a wrench in that plan at 3, where stutz goes to detroit. thats all the oddity i could see.

  4. Lego you HAVE to be from Ottawa. NOBODY outside of Ottawa references AJ Jakubec.. not even Ottawa people (and im from Ottawa lol)

  5. So…the idea of Lafrenierre going to #2, or #3 seems wild for sure, it would depend completely on whatever team is drafting at #1 and how they evaluate their roster at the Left Wing/Centre position. If, for example, some team is currently stacked at LW and C, and by comparison, have a huge disparity of talent on RW then there MIGHT be a scenario where that team passes on Lafreniere and picks Stutzle or Byfield. It's pretty unlikely that would happen. Most GM's dont wanna make an obvious mistake with the 1st overall pick. The other factor here is…teams at 2 and or 3 might offer or be forced to offer cash or a pick to ensure that the 1st team does not go off the board and draft the guy they wanted. Rare for sure, but has happened with lower round picks.

  6. I don't think anyone would take Stuz over Laf, but I could see a team who has been chasing that big stud franchise #1 center for years take Byfield. With the exception of a true #1 D man the top line young big center is impossible to trade for or get in FA you can typically only draft these kinds of players. Ask Montreal they have been looking for one for ever.

  7. Still stunned the wings are picking 4th. Hate these discussions because they're so irrelevant to me now

  8. Ngl i dont think that taking Byfield at 1 is that crazy of a thought given the fact that he's bigger, faster, better hands and almost a full year younger than Lafreniere, not to mention he plays up the middle

  9. TSN AJ is a clown. No way Laf doesn’t go 1. And furthermore, he starts his tweet with “Ive talked to scouts from 4 NHL teams and 2 DEL teams” and then he say “some believe that play in teams have QB TS at 1/2”. Well he only talked to 6 groups…. so how many is “some”???? 2 of the 6????? He’s been trying to rile up the Sens fan base since the lottery. First he talks about Byfield going 3rd, which OTT wants, now he says Laf is going 3 which benefits OTT as well. This guy has zero sources in LA, that’s for sure.

  10. This year is so stacked, that Laf is a franchise changing player, and Byfield and Stutzle would go first overall in average draft classes

  11. None of this matters. Chicago knows they have the first pick. Thats why they left 6 players behind. This is Crosby draft 2.0

  12. This draft is so deep. I haven't been this excited about a draft since 2013.
Watch Detroit draft someone totally random 🙃

  13. If Montreal is to draft first overall, they will take Lafreniere, if only to draw fans to the rink.

  14. Quinton B 82 points in 45 games in the OHL Alexis L 112 Points in 52 games in the QMJHL. How the hell do you compare scoring output in the 2 different leagues? Talking AL's size as a real plus, its important to note that Quinton is 3 inches taller and 20 lbs heavier while being almost a full year younger. I don't have a dog in this fight but I'd be interested in hearing what others think. Important caveat, the media have focused so intently on Alexis, rightly or wrongly, that its easy to get carried away by the hype…just sayin. Go back and look at how many 1st overalls were eclipsed by later picks through the years. Lots of examples!
