Ireland twice in the previous qualifying group (for Euro 2000) gave away goals in injury time (away v Croatia AND away v Macedonia). Had they prevented these goals then they would have won the group at a canter and qualified. Instead they limped out at the play-off stage and never got to play at Euro 2000.
I'd say that was what was going through Keane's mind as Ireland threw away yet another winning position vs Netherlands. The WC2002 group subsequently turned out handy for Ireland, but neither Keane nor anyone else was to know that at the time.
