Both are very good players, but for me, it’s Miko Rantanen. Rantanen in the playoffs performs and shows up in the big moments. Marner has a history of not showing up in the playoffs when needed most.

He scores more goals Hes 4 inches taller and has bigger body/frame that he loves to use He performs better in the playoffs (rantanen has over a point a game in playoffs 1.25 vs marner being just under 0.94)
Even if rantanen was on an identical contract, its a no brainer to take him and thats nothing against marner.

Someone needs to pull Marner aside and ask him with all honesty… “Dude, you block 9 million shots a season which is way more dangerous and hurts more than physical contact. Why are you afraid of physicality come playoff time?!”
No, seriously… Stepping in front of 90mph slapshots fearlessly as a clear part of your skillset, then crapping your pants when skating out of the zone seeing an opponent skate at you and deciding to bake apple turnovers boggles my mind.

McDavid and Pasta are the only 2 players to have more goals than Mikko last season. Mikko was also drafted cheaper/lower, makes less, is bigger, has a cup, no playoff effort controversy etc.
Not a fair comparison at all but Marner is still top 20 in the league imo.

They’re similar players impact wise. I’m an Avs fan living in Toronto, I’m not buying the whole Mitch doesn’t show up in the playoffs thing.
At the same cap hit it’s a tough call, with their current contracts it’s Mikko by a lot.

I like Marner, and clearly he’s well regarded for his defensive play. But even with similar numbers, Rantanen is a better goal scorer, especially at even strength, and seems to be more of a player that can almost carry a team, post and regular season.
