Let’s talk about Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jonathan Bernier, and why he wants to stay with the Wings despite his contract having expired at the end of the 2020-2021 NHL season. In fact, one of the reasons he’d like to stay is the exact regret he has about his departure from the Toronto Maple Leafs a few years ago.

Honestly, if anyone deserves to be a part of the Red Wings when they start getting better, it would be Bernier. He's the one keeping the games close and competitive. Thanks for all the Red Wings content Gio!
Bernier should start for team canada at the olympics put some respect on his name
Love Bernie, we gotta keep him with the Wings. Especially since we don't have any real prospects coming up in goal except Jan Bednar, and we're not likely to see him get a chance for a few years at least.
Honestly Bernier is the backup goalie the leafs could’ve used behind Andersen
I hope we keep him, Draft Wallstedt for him to mentor for 5+ years down the road, get prospects up (especially Seider this fall!!!), and become a bubble team maybe even this next year.
Fans love him. He should stay if the money works.
There is no guarantee if he will be a #1 starter elsewhere. (Unless EDM/Holland decides to give him a shot; or SJS can get rid of Martin Jones’ contract and sign Bernier to be their Guy).
More likely he can go to Philly, Chicago, and Nashville- be a 1B for their young starters. But that is not a better situation than DRW… and he has been with DRW for 3 years and is respected in the locker room.
Bernier will have retired before the wings are good, so IDK why he said that
I remember watching him with the Leafs. Believe me, he was a big part of the reason they were crap.
He deserves to come back if he wants I bet Stevie re-sings him
Bernier will be back. Detroit has no goalie prospects or anyone else in net. He played good and Yzerman knows it.
It would shock me if he isn't back with the wings. Steve has a way of doing that though, so it's possible. I've not heard of players leaving Detroit saying they never want to play there again. You always hear stuff about the great hockey culture. They treat our family so well. Honestly the only bad stuff I have heard came out years later, but wasn't necessarily about Detroit as a city or team, it was about one specific coach. Steve will get it done though with a contract that makes sense. I even see Stahl coming back at significantly less money than he made this year.
Here an hour after the leafs lost lmao
Bernier is a low #1 goalie but a top notch #2. I really hope Stevie finds a way to sign him for a 2 year deal. He and Greiss make a good pair. And… what else does Detroit have at goalie in the future? Not much…
