Perspectives On TRADING ALEX EDLER – Vancouver Canucks Philosophy (Trade Or Contract Extension?)

Elliotte Friedman and Sportsnet 650 had a great conversation yesterday about trading Vancouver Canucks defender Alex Edler. Additionally, TSN radio this morning had some very differing perspectives as well. There are many points-of-view to acknowledge when thinking about a scenario like this.

  1. Trade him and resign him as a UFA if he is interested. But ask him before you trade.

  2. If we can get a top 10 pick then maybe idk or we send a team a package for Jack with like 3 players and with 2nd round picks

  3. Should make a deal that we will trade him to a contender and then re-sign him for a couple more years in the summer. I guess unless he wants to stay a Canuck his whole career

  4. We could maybe put together a good package with edler, goldobin, and a pick from next year for a high 1st rounder?

  5. Good stuff LR99…thanks for your perspectives.

My preferences (not that anyone else cares) are in the following order…

    1. Trade and re-sign him in summer (I know this is unlikely)
    2. Sign him to 2 or 3 years
    3. Trade him outright and move on
    4. Let him do the Hamhuis walk

My preferred defense next season is:
    Alexander Edler
Chris Tanev (trade next season TDL)
    Troy Stetcher
    Erik Karlsson
    Quinn Hughes
    Ollie Juolevi

With these skaters I don't really care who is 7th or 8th d-man.

Lastly…please…I am dying to know…what do you say at the end of each video?

  6. Honestly the last couple seasons before this one elder was infuriating to watch but this season he has been really good. I think that's why we all undervalue him

  7. If I’m Jim Benning it’s a must to at least to approach Edler and see if it’s feasible to make some kind of deal . Not sure if it’s him or his scouting staff that deserves the credit in drafting EP and Q . Listen Jim Benning has also made a lot of mistakes . These types of situations that surround Edler are when the GM’s show what there all about. Does Jim Benning have balls ? In the past he’s made it clear he doesn’t like to approach players with no trade clauses. Will Edler help in 3 or 4 years when this team will be ready to contend at the age of 36 or 37 …….probably not . Get what we can for him , move on and let’s get ready to plan the parade in 4 years 😎

  8. The Canucks success this year has largely been Petey, but Markstrom and Edler deserve credit here as well. I'd mark them as the unsung hero's this year, and the same for Horvat.

  9. If we could get a first round pick and a prospect I think that would just be too hard to ever pass up on. Especially with the possibility of being able to resign Edler if he really wanted to stay in Vancouver.

  10. How come Boeser in EA NHL looks absolutely nothing like him in real life? Couldn't he take a short trip to Burnaby and get some photos taken?

  11. I would agree to trade him for assets, maybe try to get a pick and a decent prospect or established player back in return. And maybe try to resign him in free agency if he's willing to return, maybe offer him a 2-3 year deal around 3-4 per season

  12. Trade him…(upon his approval)…he’s of value now… his points this yr come off of EP’s and BB’s efficiency to finish. On majority of teams he’s top 4 while with nucks he’s top so if he is seen as worthy of a 1st rounder… they should pull the trigger. Then sign him later if it’s meant to be…

  13. Vancouver reminds me of Toronto from 2 years ago. They could make the playoffs, and that's both a step forward and a step back. You say to your team that winning is always important, but the penalty for that is that you don't get as good of a draft pick. Because of how unpredictable the draft can be I would say that going for the win and the winning mentality is more important considering how many prospects are in the system.

With regards to Friedman, he's a great journalist but his hockey knowledge isn't something that I would take as gospel, or even somewhat reliable. I really don't think you'll be getting a 1st for Edler.
