Following a Game 7 loss in the Stanley Cup Final, Bruce Cassidy said he just wanted his name on hockey’s hallowed trophy.
His wish came true, but not with the Boston Bruins.
Cassidy, along with former Bruins Reilly Smith and Phil Kessel, won the Cup on Tuesday, and Ian McLaren puts a final pin in the conversation about whether it was the right decision to make a change behind the bench.
Plus, a look at how Smith and Kessel got from Boston to Vegas and the top of the hockey world.
Buyout window opens tomorrow, by the way. Farewell, Mitchell Miller.

Everyone in media who chastised Boston for celebrating Borque’s cup are now over the moon about Cassidy’s.
From a Vegas fan thank you for sending Cassidy our way! When Pacioretty left he famously said there wasn’t enough expectation in the locker room here and Cassidy provided that which seemed to be what we needed to get over top. He’s a hell of a coach. He out coached every coach we played in this post season. The chess game. He’s a genius at it
ugh nothing against Cassidy never wanted him fired but when your not a bruin the last thing i want for you is to win the cup.. and not the year after haha, maybe after bruins win that's fine, Borque’s cup i was happy to see, and if jumbo Joe would of won the year with sharks other then that NOPE
Good job Boston giving up on a stud coach
Big thanks from Vegas for Bruce !! 😊
No way Boston Bruins get deep into the postseason with that 2022 – 2023 roster. They lack size. They attempted to get through the first round resting Bergeron/Kreci.. and it back – fired. Plus, they are small centers to start with.
Where is the Boston Bruins roster for 2023 – 2024? They are crazy if they start Bergeron/Kreci. They have no big centers on the roster.
Your Wrong! This Boston Bruin roster is old and small to go through four playoff opponents after the regular season schedule. The change needed to come from the roster.. not the coach. What do you expect? Bergeron is 35/Kreci is 36 and neither of them are big, physical centers.
1 mans O, Bs fans should take the time to watch the players meeting Monte held before the Florida series on behind the B. Enuff Said, he hit all the points you need to hit as a coach for a cup run. But this day in age you always have a problem with players who run teams, in this case Bergy and his mates. Hey, Bergy during the season gets no complaints on the ice but the Sweeney appointed softy behind the bench on the other hand did not rule the roost. Bergy says I’m playing in a meaningless game and the coach lets him, and when asked about it says you can’t sit a hall of famer when he wants to play. Monte is spineless and a that BS about hiding behind goalie Bob for decisions on a starter and then later saying he had final say is a perfect example for sure. You bet he’ll have a high mountain to climb to get the respect back and he may even see back talk from some. Bergy HOF and (Sit a year out) Krecji are going to have to live with fans questioning their selfishness. JD, had a much better season even with an injury, but he as everyone knew, is no playoff guy. Carlo played great and was arguably the best D man in the FL series. Your not winning a cup with him flopping all over your goal tender. The two high paid D men Mac and Lindholm, so inconsistent hit one night invisible the next two.(and don’t hide behind injuries).
The great season was the result of players playing with confidence, in their goalie! They could make mistakes and their goalie saved them, that cannot be argued. Ulmark was a brick wall, not Swayman, but when he went down that confidence was gone and when FL put the pressure on they exposed the weakness of this team. 6-5 all year was awful. Monte always went with Bergy and Marshy defending and rarely did they get the puck out of the zone for an empty netter. It ended up being there nemesis. The PP was awful all year. Though even the years before Cassidy couldn’t fix it and Monte didn’t do much better, but it was not the problem against FL. Maybe in the off season Sweeney and the hall of famer will concentrate on the two guys who have no clue what kind of players win cups. (We have something real special here guys) 3 yrs and they still have defenseman who are 5’ 9” and 6’ 1”paid one of them 9 mill. Sure they went out and spent some money the last two years but other than Nosek and Orlly they came up empty. Please, someone tell Jaffe number #73 is not a Norris trophy defensemen. The long and short of this great season was they went down in flames courtesy of MK and his Marrauders (guys that played hard everyshift till the final buzzer) after they were told they were a bunch of wusses by a hockey tough guy. JD’s father ought to be real proud he raised a 6’ 1” cream puff. Instead of using Cassidy as a scape goat they should have listened to Bruce when he sat JD and pushed Carlo and Trent to use their size. I didn’t see too many cream puffs for the Knights in the cup run. "Mr Softy"played 82 regular season games and sat the pine because he couldnt hold Reilly Smiths jock. (why don’t we get players like that) Don’t worry though Donnie you filled the seats for the owners who know nothing about winning cups. Can’t wait till next year, more 150 foot playoff hockey (if we get there) and the return of those temper tantrums from the hall of famer on the tenth floor, I miss those. Sorry, if I seem a little upset, but i mistakenly thought there was meaning behind wearing the spoke B and being incharge of the players who wear it.
If Cassidy was Bruins coach he wouldn't have hesitated to replace an injured Ullmark and we would have gone on to beat the Leafs.
Bruce finally got his name on the damn Cup
