S5:E5 SKATE LIKE JUUSE | WHY TRYOUT? | 16” TO THE BLOCKER
To play your best and maybe even play in the NHL you must a great goalie skater like Juuse Saros. Shuffles in your upright stance, shuffles in your deeper stance, T-Pushes, and learning your path of travel are clearly demonstrated. I deliver some pointed words in my Bronco chat at honestly looking at why your kid is trying out at different levels. And in our Drill of the week, we look at proper use of blocker side stick and blocker involvement, maybe even using using your head.

2:35. I could easily make an argument. You’re moving to cover net first. It’s not physics, it’s geometry.
One year better! That is what it is ultimately about.
Good stuff. As a goalie Dad I need advice on navigation try out season. The drama that just unfolded for almost no reason ruined my kids season. He made 2 teams, picked a team and within 2 weeks that team collapsed. 1 kid left, so another left. Then 3 got worried and left. Then the rest went where the others went because their team was leaving. Until no one was left.
I'd like to argument that the c-shape t-push style is because you push on the shortest path to the angle and use the momentum to gain depth, thus looking like a c-shape. You can also demonstrate this by doing a c-cut back, shuffle to the right angle and c-cut out to gain depth.
Was the ideology behind middle first not supposed to be so that your body is already square? I get the shorter angle argument, but can see the other side too
Regarding the middle first, I coach it as a situational thing. D2D or wall to Far D for a 1T. The reason is to avoid wasting time in the "dead zone" These situations are typically fast hard shots and in order to play the percentages, I believe covering 30-40% of the net is better than covering 0% of the net and as you challenge, you to cover more. Now, all that being said, there is a sweet spot in the crease, so you're not going deep into the crease to get into the triangle.
As for straight-across movements, I coach them as a closer more confined movement.
I do not believe there is one way to control a puck and I tell my goalies what works for me, might not work for you, this is why I do it this way, this is why I coach it this way. Give it an honest try for a few practices, if you find it's not working for you we can adapt the movements. Goalies are only as good as their movements if they're uncomfortable doing them, they'll be slower, less confident which an result in some bad goals. If we don't adapt the movements to goalies and expect them to do the same movements the exact same way we'll never improve the position. Imagine if Roy didn't do the Butterfly as he did because it wasn't the "correct" way to control the puck..
Love the Bronco Chat Coach
Thanks! I really needed to hear that after last week, a coach's kid made the travel team despite their head to head performance at the tryout, and they only took one. #oneyearbetter
Great tips as always. The life advice is even better for kids and parents.
Keeks what do I do if the next level team is handpicked through the season and I want to go up in levels. I know I have the same or higher skill level than some of the current goalies playing for those teams. What do I do?
I learned the middle-first t-push from Clark at GDI "back in the day", made sense at the time but I think the best argument against it was "if time is so critical that you need angle first then why are you t-pushing instead of dropping to a butterfly slide"
My kid was a goalie from age 8-17. COVID caused him to turn into a defenseman because the only skate he could get into was a private pick up skate that already had goalies. In 2 short years he grew almost 6 inches and has become a dynamo at defense. Killin it in the highest division of adult league here. Signed him up for an NCDC junior tryout in May. This video u just made (your talk at the end) is awesome! My kid is going into these tryouts for the experience. ZERO expectations for anything! He just wants to see how he stacks up. Great if he makes the cut, great if he doesn't! Either way I'm a proud papa at the fact he has come so far in just 2 years of skating out. By the way, that private skate is me and all my buddies (cops, firefighters, and some retired from both). I'm one of the goalies and NONE of my buddies can get past my son on the ice. Well, there is one………Owen Nolan plays with us once in a while and he does a pretty good job of handling my son lol!!!
I first skated at 11yo and went strait to a goaltender. I ranked all the goalies of the best goalies in my region and took down the next best guy, 1 at a time. Im here at 16yo and soon to be playing aaa. Its all about working hard in practices and getting comfortable in games. It comes down to how much you love getting better. Its not teachable thing for parents, its just a passion in the kid. For example many goalies in my region are rich and have tens of thousands invested into private training ect, but none of them the passion for the game as I do, now I am over taking them. And its nearly impossible to bump aaa goalies, you just have to keep inproving and wait for a spot to open. One tip is to go to your coaches spring camps, and treat that as your tryout. Thanks for reading hope this helped
