Reddit Protest and /r/CalgaryFlames

**Where have we been?**

This subreddit has been in private mode for the past few days in protest of Reddit’s upcoming changes to their API, their response to community feedback and how these changes will affect all users of this website.

**Did it work?**

Hell no. Reddit and it’s CEO /u/spez don’t give a shit.

Also some sub-reddits having a two-day limit on their blackout was probably one of the dumbest things we have ever seen. Don’t worry Reddit, we’ll be back in two days. Muah love you! Kisses!

While Reddit hasn’t completely changed their position, they have given a few small concessions so far. Increasing the proposed limit and making exceptions for certain types of 3rd party applications. So while the protest may seem stupid in your eyes, Reddit has taken notice. We hope they will continue to listen to community feedback and will make their changes fair to users and developers of this platform.

**Why are we back?**

/r/CalgaryFlames is a relatively small subreddit and without the support of major subreddits sticking to the full blackout, there is little purpose in us remaining private. At this point we believe we may be hurting our community more than Reddit and we don’t really think that is fair to our members. For the moment, we are back.

**So, what is next?**

Well we want that to be open for discussion. What should we do?

1. Nothing, operate like normal
2. Hold strong, go back to putting this sub in private until Reddit amends their proposed changes significantly and supports it’s community members and community developers.
3. Rolling Blackout. Blackout every Tuesday for 24 hours.
4. Post this image like other sub-reddits are doing and vote it up. [https://i.redd.it/p68m7xvggi5b1.png](https://i.redd.it/p68m7xvggi5b1.png)
5. Other suggestions?

**Why should I care?**

While were in private, we received a few messages from people saying that they don’t give a fuck, just bring back the sub. We understand this sentiment, we really do. For many users of this website, they don’t care, it doesn’t affect them. They use the new Reddit, they use the Reddit app, all is good in the world. However, we do hope that these users can see beyond what affects them and look to see how it affects others. There is a lot more to what happens on Reddit than meets the eye.

If you really are interested, we suggest you do your own research on this topic. Here is another post with an update of what the next steps maybe for many subs [https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/148ks6u/indefinite\_blackout\_next\_steps\_polling\_your/](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/148ks6u/indefinite_blackout_next_steps_polling_your/)

Your little protest accomplished nothing, get back to normal operations. You lost , the big company always wins. Rolling blackouts will accomplish nothing but lose followers. Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face.

I think the majority of users don’t see the need to protest over using third party apps for browsing reddit However, I don’t think that users fully understand and appreciate the need for 3rd party mod tools to keep the sub well-run.

[Is this concession sufficient for moderation needs?](https://mods.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/16693988535309-Moderation-Bots-Tooling)

If so, then I would suggest not closing the sub. Or, at least holding it to a vote/poll.

So bit the bullet and tested the Reddit app this morning holy fuck this app is garbage. I’m really going to miss RIF.

As the post said, if every major sub reddit went dark beyond 2 days, I think something could have actually been accomplished. Since that didn’t happen, i dont think there’s any point in a small sub like this staying private.

For everyone saying, “But who cares” like braindead idiots, 3 party applications can help blind and other disabled users access this sub and make browsing reddit actually somewhat tolerable.

All of this is to say I want to thank the mods for the work that they do, and I’ll support whatever decision they end up making

Just return to normal operation. I’m all for standing up to “the man” but this was doomed from the start when a bunch of the subs said this was a 48 hour blackout and we missed out on big team news with the Huska and Iginla announcements because of it. If we lose access to the game day threads then so be it, as unfortunate as it would be, but closing the whole sub down does nothing but harm for trying to keep up with team news and I personally sure as shit won’t be installing Facebook or Twitter to follow the Flames

I vote 1, back to normal.

If you don’t stay open, a new Flames sub is inevitable.

My stance on the blackout softened, but it’s not something that will work on a medium where a replacement can be made so easily. Yeah it’ll take some time to grow into what this sub has become, but if you go dark again someone will make one and even r/Flames has a new post for the first time in years already.

I don’t know why any timeline was announced, should have been an indefinite protest from the beginning instead of saying 48 hours. Reddit can die off at this point.
