It looks like it will be three-way battle for the third LD spot on the Canucks blue line.

  1. With Green coaching it will be Brad Hunt coz he is the oldest :/ Greener love a good old aging, slow, easily coachable vet back there.

  2. Juolevi will be in a tough competition for a spot on the final pairing. He might need more time to marinate in Abbotsford tho. If he can clear waivers.

  3. I think OJ should get the spot if he comes into camp a little stronger and healthy. He played well in his limited minutes last year, and will only get better. He had some injury bad luck earlier in his career that set him back a bit. But the potential for a good 5-7 D-man is there. I think the Canucks need to give him a long look on the big club. Sending him down to the AHL doesn't do anything for his development. Been there, done that! If he is our 7th-8th D, then it has to be Rathbone. He looked totally ready for the NHL game and has the most upside. If he doesn't look good in the preseason, which I doubt will happen, then send him down to play 23 minutes per night in the AHL as he doesn't need to clear waivers. But he needs to play this year, as I think he will be on the Canucks long-term. Preseason will be fun, as there is competition for the back-end D spots.

  4. Juolevi would be my bet because he’s a good defensive defenseman and young – the Canucks need that. They don’t need more scoring from the back end. They need guys who are smart and can help Thatcher out.

  5. I think it's a risky move sending OJ to the minors. I don't think Benning will let him be picked up for nothing.

  6. At the end of the day I don't have an opinion now, depends on camp. As mentioned Bonesy has no waiver threat so he should have to absolutely dominate camp to make the team imo. Ideal scenario is OJ learned to skate this summer and becomes a reliable defensive d man. Would suck to lose him for nothing. I think we have the space to scratch hunt and schenn at the same time

  7. I'm pretty much given up on a.k.a OldLevi as I call him because he spent so many years in the minors don't ever know what the Canuck saw in him to have drafted him over players that were drafted after him when they could have took a great forward instead of him if we lose him by placing him on waivers I won't lose no sleep over it one-way contract for him what a waste of money just as much as the wasted money when Mark Messier played for the Canucks that was the biggest waste of money mechanics ever spent and you'll Libby's one-way contract is the second biggest waste of money let him go cut him loose he's never going to be a Canuck the worst pick the Canucks have ever wasted a first-round pick on

  8. I would say Rathbone out of the 3, probably my favourite. However wouldn’t be upset if any or all 3 challenged and made a case that they should all be up. Would be interesting if they outplay a defenceman in camp who people assume are already in the top 6

  9. I'm hoping we keep Jack in Abbotsford due to his waiver exemption and larger cap hit (plus we can play him in big minutes and have him be an all situations player), and keep Olli up to groom him as a shutdown pair/ big minute two way guy (Hunt would be a good PP shot and we can keep him as the #7).

  10. Just went to the Malahat Skywalk last weekend! Beautiful sights and the rope walkway at the top was pretty cool (kids seemed to love it!). Hope you had a nice time, Clay.

  11. They all need to fight it out at training camp there is no free pass for anyone

  12. Juolevi sucks so it'll be between Rathbone and Hunt. I expect Rathbone to get the job and Hunt to sub in and give him the night off on occasion as most rookies have a slump once in a while. Should just cut ties with Juolevi either by trade or not re-signing him after this year. Terrible mistake that year in the draft by Benning.

  13. It should be Juolevi's spot to lose….which he likely will as Green seems to not be in favor of him, so I wouldn't be surprised but somewhat disappointed if Rathbone gets it.

  14. The ideal situation would be to have all 3 candidates battle it out in training camp and see who emerges. Hopefully, all of them will impress, but I'm secretly hoping for OJ to surprise everyone and show that he is capable of playing 10 years in the NHL, as JB boldly predicted.

  15. Rathbone looks good and NHL ready during his brief showing with his skating and threat on the power play.

  16. A huge Shout Out to Gail for being such a good sport and supporting you as you follow your passion for Canucks hockey even while on vacation! Go Gail Go! 🏆j

  17. In a perfect world I would say who earns it in training camp. That might not be the case. I don't know Hunt. Tough call. Might have to go to Rock, paper scissors to decide.

  18. Granlund (Conor) already praised Rathbone in his first interview saying he's going to impress and look out. So…. I'm going to say Jack!

  19. Rathbone is the clear pick. What’s not clear are these B.C. skies. All my life never seen this, now it’s the last 5 summers and every year worse than last. Ugh. Worst air quality in the world today. Stay inside if it’s like this Saturday. Not worth it.

  20. This is why we love Clay…man is on vacation and still showing up for us.

  21. Clay, sending OJ to Abby is a pipe dream. No way no how he clears. Basically, you're tossing away this first-round pick who for once in his career just needs some proper ice time to prove himself. No way in Benning's world will this ever happen. Zero chance. Imagine the press when OJ gets scooped. Now that is the kinda daft move that gets a guy fired. I love your work but thank god you're not our GM! Either Hunt or Rathbone will be in Abby, and the historical odds seem to favour Rathbone being the likely candidate for Abby, as he can't be scooped, and as you say, third-pairing minutes are not ideal, especially for an offensive defenceman who has nothing to give on the PK. Behind Hughes and OEL, Rathbone is suddenly out on the PP for the next many seasons to come, which likely means once it's his time for a pay raise, maybe his fate is now that he'll be traded at the deadline for whatever the Canucks are lacking for Benning's Cup run (a PK-specialist defenceman?). Or maybe he goes down to earn some street cred on the PK. But of course, if you're going for it, you trade from strength, which as we see in this exercise is left-side offensive D. At least OJ seems like he's tooled to become a very solid PK contributor, which is what's missing from this current mix—Edler and Tanev style.

  22. OH NO! I'm from Victoria but I'm in Vancouver this weekend! That would've been cool!

  23. I would be ok with any one of them. But kinda would prefer jack rathbone just because i think he has more upside

  24. You’re smoking something funny Clay if you think Rathbone is better offensive guy here. Have you seen Hunt play? He’s a solid puck mover, can skate, has a cannon of a shot and can run a PP
