I never heard anything about Mike Keenan as a possibility. Whoever considered him was delusional.
Why not someone new that has the passion and toughness over Corey Perry? Same with the coach. Where's the creativeness.. Hiring 200 year old veterans wont't cut it!
Signing Panarin Trouba Mika and Fox long term was a problem. Locked them into big money and tried to end rebuuld too early which lead to young guys not getting ice time to develop and no cap space. Went from youngest team in the league with A+ prospect pool to the 2nd oldest team with no prospects in basically 1 year. They also failed to develop 4 of 6 first round picks and they traded young players and picks for assets and spent irresponsibly in free agency on Goodrow, reaves etc.
What do they have to show for it? 2 wins in an eastern conf final where they would have gotten crushed by Colorado even if they did manage to beat Tampa.
They should have stayed the course and had an 8 year window instead of a quick 2 year window thats now closing again.
Devils did it right. Fed Hughes ice time till he figured it out, kept lots of cap space, developed young guys and got an extra year of draft picks. Carefully spent minimally in free agency and are now both better than NYR currently and will be for the long term.

Your argument about them getting to the finals is a straw man, the point is sure they're an OK team and anyone get can get lucky. Getting lucky isn't sustainable though, building a team the right way for the long hall is. That's why it's silly to argue that in a vacuum once they make theneasyern conf finals the owner doesn't matter. They got there in spite of the owner on luck and goaltending, and now they are very unlikely to get back cuz they created a very limited window for themelseves based on mismanagement and top down failure
As a Ranger fan, the Philadelphia Flyers are the biggest rival and I wanted Quenneville, but Laviolette was my 2nd choice, so I’m happy. If Kane and Tarasenko come back, they win the Laviolette hire, just like they would’ve won, if Quenneville were hired. As a result, that would be an automatic victory for Shesterkin. We know that Quenneville has ties to Kane. Laviolette also has ties to Kane. Laviolette coached Kane with Team USA in the 2014 Sochi Olympics and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, while both times as an assistant. Laviolette almost coached Kane with Team USA in the 2022 Beijing Olympics, as well, but the COVID-19 pandemic kept everybody at home.
I think that Mike Keenan's got to Legally Change His Name to Forever Grateful. He didn't win a Cup with Chicago either. My Chicago Black Hawks Got Swept in 1992 by A Pittsburgh Penguins Team that Trounced Chicago. The Only Team, if I'm not mistaken, was The 1994 Rangers. Let me know what you think.
