  1. Some players r financially secure leave some money on the table. If they can't I would look at moving them.

  2. Why should this team cave into short term, high priced deals? Honestly, these guys can cash in on endorsements here in T.O. way more than they can anywhere else. Toronto is the Yankees of hockey and have a world wide appeal. Also, given they haven't achieved anything yet post-season, so how can they demand to be paid more than players who have?

  3. Let him sign until McDavids contract expires. When is that? 3 years? Don’t give him no-trade and no-moves. Id love to see Connor playing for the Leafs, and I’m sure he would love it too!

  4. I agree 8 mill 4 Willie trade mitch. We need the cap space. Help on the defense. Interesting off season

  5. I don't think Mathews is in for winning. It seems he doesn't care about surrounding him with great players to win the cup. Mathews wouldn't have got 60 goals without Marner.

  6. At least Nylander & JT delivered in the playoffs. Their play got us to the second round. But Marner and Mathews did nothing big.

  7. I really like this discourse on the shorter term deal idea surrounding Matthews, similar to what we see in the NBA. I grew up an NHL fan, but eventually after highschool I became a fan of the NBA. The main reason was because the NHL got dry, got boring, and not just because they eventually wanted to make the game more safe. But now when reflecting through this discourse, the long contracts are definitely a contributor. While they do secure your favourite players forever, it also leads to a lot of the same season to season, but more importantly it puts so much more pressure on the NHL season to carry the entertainment. Whereas being an NBA fan, it feels like a year-round show. Yes I know there is the draft, trades and just general fan interest, but having the contracts expire faster ramps up the possible shake-ups, new rumours paid off quicker, puts more pressure to make deals and new trade options come in sooner. But most importantly it drives fan interest through the off season by not only having more free agents, but producing more of those other offseason possibilities.

Now, I am not a fan of Matthews, don't think he deserves the money. But MONEY ASIDE on what you think one player is worth, for the sake of the NHL, I like the idea of moving in the direction of shorter contracts. I want to see those shake-ups, different team variations form and engage in the free agency discourse more often than not. "It's not how the NHL works" but in my opinion even just starting to change the landscape is a good thing. Nobody wants to enter a rebuild, especially when your team doesn't reach any notable success, but rebuilds can pay off and bring great things down the line. New life and new excitement. In this case its about rebuilding something that can be very interesting and exciting.

  8. 3 year deal? Sure, but no trade protection then. Tired of him wanting to be the highest paid NHLer over the team being built. Sorry bye bye, thats how you deemphaized the core 4

  9. I wonder how many years the guys are ok with seeing half the team turnover just so they can get their money? if all the extra cap comes if it just goes to them I'll be upset.

  10. So what if Mathews , Marner , and Nylander get Points in the Regular Season.
If They are Afraid to Step Up Their Game in the Playoffs and Dominate Their Zones and the Puck , They aren't Worth a Dime to Me.
Puck Dominance is the Number One Check Mark on My list of Great Hockey Players and Mathews Marner Nylander and Rasmmusen Don't even make the Maybe List.
A Rating of 1 to 10 for Ice Hockey Dominance for those 3 barely rates a 1 , Fact.

  11. Not sure how signing Matthews to a 5 year deal is bad. You locked him up for his prime years and by the time it expires he’ll be approaching mid 30’s. Why would you want to pay him 15 million for those extra 3 years when he would be a shadow of his former self? Take 5 years and run.

  12. STOP Falling for the Contract Talk
Your Pay in the NHL is Determined by how much the Owners and Management would like to have a Beer with You and Your Family.
It has Nothing to do with Your Ability to Win the Cup and Benefit the Team.
The NHL is the Only Company that would sign these Corrupted Contracts for Players that haven't Proved Themselves.
You would sign those Types of Contracts for any Other Job.
It is Totally Nepotism and the Buddy System Protecting Each Others Contract Justification for Totally Failed Seasons, Draft Picks and the Terrible Coaching.
Don't Dis the NHL or You wont be Invited to the Game Party and You wont get a Job in Any Hockey , Anywhere , GET IT?

  13. The NFL has a hard cap and there are super teams…Chiefs, Bills, Bengals, and Packers until last year. Just because Leafs management is incompetent doesn’t mean you need to change rules. If there wasn’t parity in the NBA these 2 guys would whine about how the Raptors can’t win because they can’t attract superstars.

  14. if matthews only wants 3 years give no trade protection or trade him now for a boat load and cap space.

  15. As a soccer fan, parity is underrated. German, French, and Spanish leagues are dominated by one team, two at most. Even the Premier League has become Manchester City and everyone else plays for second.

  16. Everywhere the Bruins play there are always contingents of fans in black and gold cheering them on in away games. Lots of love for the Bs all over.

  17. What has A. M. done to deserve big money. Has he put the team on his back and won them a cup. He is a mercenary let him go to the highest bidder. I would not want him on the Bruins. AM cares about AM. That's it. How many times do you have to slam the door on your finger to know that it hurts.

  18. 9.5 million minus 53 percent is four million four hundred sixty-five thousand. After ONTARIO AND FED TAXES. And if you half to take that money to another country it's another tax.

  19. The fewer pre season games wouldn’t shorten it cause I think it’s so they can add more reg games after adding in last two teams so its divisions play 4 games other division in conference play 3 and west vs east play 2 which would be 84 game seasons now.
