Wow, you’d think something this big would get more attention around here.

  2. Worst possible outcome. Not sure what Lavi brings other than same ole same ole.

After having some time to dwell on this, I’m not mad about it. I’m not ecstatic, but I’m not mad.

The worst thing about the reddit blackout is that now this news has been out for days and we won’t be able to look back on some extreme reactions

I really really dislike this hire. I know it *is* the safe choice, but it’s just so boring. If the players turned on Gerard Gallant after 1.5 years, I highly doubt they will cling to Laviolette for much longer.

there are rumors that Drury is more involved when it comes to the lineups (someone said that getting someone to develop Lafrenière will be a big part of the search), and I think the Jones one-way signing shows that, but still.

I’d love to be wrong, but idk. This feels very lateral to me, he’s gonna cling to the vets.

  6. really just have no idea how NYR can watch teams win the cup with relatively-fresher coaches who bring in modernized systems and analytics, only to then go and hire a guy who is virtually identical to 4 of the last 5 coaches they’ve hired in the last ~15 years, all of whom have failed to do what they were hired to accomplish

“we hired Laviolette because he has won the cup before/made the finals, and we have a team that is ready to win now, so we are confident that he will help us win a cup because of this experience and winning pedigree” ~~-Philadelphia~~ ~~-Nashville~~ ~~-Washington~~ -NYR

the last coach to win a cup with 2 different organizations was Scotty Bowman in 1997. it’s just such a terrible mindset for hiring a coach. they literally hired Laviolette to do what he just failed to do with 3 different organizations

all of this wouldn’t be an issue if Laviolette actually had good coaching impacts, like retreads such as Mike Sullivan. but Laviolette doesn’t. in fact he’s got some of the worst impacts in the league, [especially offensively](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FwxnZGHWYAAs8hk?format=jpg&name=large). he also can’t develop young players, [this was already a conspicuous issue in Washington](https://russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2023/04/29/peter-laviolette-shifts-blame-onto-young-players-when-asked-about-his-reluctance-to-give-them-opportunity-at-nhl-level/), so they’re kind of screwed with getting Kakko/Laf to take the bigger jump that they’re expected to take

you need offense to win championships. the average number of goals scored by the winning team in these playoffs was 4.32 per game. for the losing team, it’s 1.97. of the 88 playoff games, there were more games where the winning team scored 5 goals (19) and 6 goals (10) than 2 goals (8). there were 6 games in which the winning team scored 7 goals. there were as many games in which the winning team scored 8 and 9 goals, as there were where the winning team scored 1. but NYR just hired a coach whose strategy is to try to hold 2-1 leads…
