Canucks news: who is Nate Schmidt’s ideal blue line partner?

You could make an argument for Nate Schmidt playing with Quinn Hughes or Alex Edler.

  1. Hughes and Schmidt prolly will cause some goal to be scored against us but the amount of goals they gonna produce gonna be much more unlike myers.

  2. Alexander Edler.
I think Schmidt is a top pair defenceman, a top 3 for sure. Edler and Myers are fringe top 4 defencemen, IMO.
I think that Hughes can carry his own pair and that it´s better to "spread the wealth", and have Hughes and Schmidt on different pairs, Hughes with Myers and Schmidt with Edler.

  3. I would have Hughes and Schmidt in different pairings to pair up an offensive D (Hughes and Schmidt) with a defensive D (Edler and Myers).

4:12 I thought that was Edler walking by in the background lol

  4. I’d like to see: Hughes and Schmidt
    Edler and Myers
    Juolevi and Rathbone
I’d also like to see Rafferty get a shot as well as Chatfeild. Go Canucks Go!

  5. Hughes and Myers then Edler with Schmidt, he and Quinn can each carry their own pair. We can put him with Quinn in late game situations if we need scoring

If Juolevi and Rafferty are ready,

Hughes – Myers, Juolevi – Schmidt, Edler – Rafferty (take advantage of weaker forward groups)

  6. I think in reality it is best to split them. Have a strong balance of quick offence mixed with big defense (Hughes-Myers, Schmidt-Edler). Doesn't make as much sense to have a very offensive first line and a very defensive second line when each can be split and complement each other. Ie, let one get in on the action and have Edler or Myers stay home.

That said, mixing Hughes and Schmidt together at times like when we want a burst of attack, or on a powerplay (still works to go 3-2 instead of 4-1 with them as they are both like extra attackers anyway), just like you can probably put the two big guys together on the PK.

Having the Hughes-Schmidt pairing as an occasion to be like "ooohhh shhhiiiittt" rather than the default is more appealing to me.

  7. I don't really see Hughes and Myers being a good fit together. That's the only thing about this that I'm not a huge fan of. At least at this point in Hughes' career. Maybe with a couple more years of experience on Hughes' part, it would work out better, but I just don't see it.

  8. Just a thought what about? 1) Edler – Hughes 2) Schmidt – Myers 3) Benn/Juolevi- Rafferty/Chatfield. I think Hughes would be able to play the right side well while Edler does his thing on the left. We would be able to have Schmidt on his natural side. That would make two solid two way defensemen on the second pairing. Then we can sub in whoever is playing well and matchup on the 3rd.

  9. While Hughes and Schmidt would be the best D pairing in the league and I have no doubt Hughes would have an 80 point season next to Nate, they should be used conservatively together in tight situations such as being down a goal in the final minutes of a game. Otherwise, to have 40-45 minutes a game with each of them on the ice actually spreads the wealth on our d corps more.

  10. i want to to see edler hughs mostly cause edler struggles with getting the puck out of his own zone and hughs can help with that. then myers and schmidt
