After departing the Toronto Maple Leafs, Jason Spezza has landed in Pittsburgh as an Assistant GM to Kyle Dubas. This was a move that was rumoured to be in the making ever since Spezza submitted his resignation to Brendan Shanahan shortly after Dubas was let go. A rivalry has been born between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins.

No rivalry – zero – nada – between the Leafs and the Pens. They play each other three times a year. No rivalry. This is an entirely generated Toronto-we-are-the-center-of-the-hockey-universe. To be a rivalry you need two sides. Pittsburgh HAS rivals – Washington, Philly, the Islanders, Rangers – why – even Colombus or possibly even Buffalo would be more of a "rivalry" the Pens than the Leafs. Nobody in the 'burg cares one bit about the soap-opera dramas of Toronto's front office clown show.
The rapidity of Spezza's quit makes this hire one of the least surprising things to happen. I like him and would wish him all the best. I think the Pens got a stand up guy for the front office.
