Following Ekman-Larson buyout, is Murray next?

he Vancouver Canucks have bought out the remaining four years of d-man Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s contract, making the veteran blueliner a UFA. While the Maple Leafs have to make a decisison on goalie Matt Murray’s future with the team. TSN’s Director of Scouting Craig Button joins SportsCentre to discuss the buyout, what it means for the club’s immediate future and what new general Brad Treliving will do with their backup goalie.

  1. buy murray out year 1 you save 4 million, year 2 you save 2.6 million, because year 1 you only have to pay cap hit of 600k and year 2 – 2million

  2. What are they waiting for its woll and samsonov in net . Murray already proved he is injury prone so buy him out is only option you not giving up another draft pick to get rid of his contract thats absolutely stupid. Trading him doesnt make sence either because you have to probably take back someone else bad contract. The cap is going up anyway its only a small amount towards your cap the 1st year the 2nd year it will be little over 2 million but the cap going up anyway.

  3. Murray was nothing but an albatross around this teams neck since day one. Another huge mistake by the wonderboy Kyle Dumbass.

  4. Ok, let's play the Joseph Woll card.
    7 games played.
    Goes 6-1.
    Pretty good.
Faced 4 non playoff teams (including Columbus, twice, going 1-1), and the Rangers and Lightning when both teams were resting players.
Saying he's a better goalie than Murray (who played 24 games, with 13 against playoff teams, 14-8-2) is a bit like saying Calgary was a better team than the Panthers because they had more points.
    Ok.
But they also had 4 fewer wins.

  5. Trade him. Draft picks mean nothing to Toronto since they already have a playoff team long term. Send him to Chicago for picks like always with cap dump players on the leafs. Chicago could send back quality depth players in the trade too

  6. Ppl are saying the Leafs will try to cheat the LTIR system by stuffing Murray on Robidas Island…Lol

  7. It’s a tough call on Murray. He’s the only goalie under contract in the Leafs system that has played more than 24 career games. Samsonov (unsigned RFA) can play half of the games for you. As good as Woll has looked he has only played 15 games; Kallgren: 24. So can these three get you through an 82-game season? Sure you can save 4m this year if you buy Murray out, but you add 2.6m cap hit to next year when both Matthews and Nylander will be playing with new, bigger contracts (if you re-sign them). Cap space is important, current and future. Treliving’s got a tough decision ahead.
