This is such a made up scapegoat it's weird
Ok. It is NOT mandatory to have a celebrity owner. Many franchises around the world do not, and they do incredibly well. However, Ottawa is a city that has a very flat profile in terms of entertainment and excitement. This is not a knock on my hometown, it's simply a fact. Nothing here will ever measure up to the rumblings down the 401 (both ways). What i will say is that not having a celebrity owner, is a missed opportunity. Marketing is so crucial to small market teams, and in a city where Leafs and Habs fans outnumber the resident Senators fans, we need to look outward to attract fans from beyond the market. The best way to do this, which is a common business practice in the industry, is to use global personalities to lure in the intrigue of non hockey fans. Look at Welcome to Wrexham. Yes we always hear the " he did such a great job,… but blah blah …its not what really matters … blah blah…". Now look at the continuous return! A HOCKEY PODCAST and AJ from tsn1200, cannot shut up about a 3rd rate shit soccer team in bumfuck nowhere wales. The senators need that attention, otherwise we are destined to being the annoying little brother to Montreal and Toronto who demands to play in the games because " we are a big Canadian city too!!".
