This should be good: On WHO should the Canucks use their $7M in cap savings this year from this move?
I dont think they have to worry about resigning ep40, he said he wants to play for a team with chance to win.
Billy G. two years ago: Hold my beer. Welcome to the 8yr buyout club Canucks fans …
Let’s mortgage the future so we can maybe get 94 points and get slaughtered in the first round this year. NO. Keep OEL, maybe the team sucks again which is GOOD before you need to accumulate TOP DRAFT PICKS to build up your system. Now the Canucks just screwed themselves for the next decade. I’m sad because I love to see my team (kings) play my Canadian family’s team (Canucks) in the playoffs. Unfortunately they are a total clown show and won’t win a cup until 2048.
Pettersson to islanders. I know Horvat will convince Pettersson to join
Okay…so, I'm going out on a limb here, because I know n-o-t-h-i-n-g about the Canuks team. I am almost as far away as one can get from them…Florida Panthers. This is more of a general observation about trades and various other deals. I have often marveled at how differently a player performs for another team. Is it the atmosphere of the organization (both the team leaving and the team joining)? Is it the line mates? Why does the player who is the greatest thing pending the Second Coming of the Lord become the hot potato 1/2 way into his contract? The Panthers were very lucky (I suppose management thinks it's their skill) when we got Tkachuk. He did work out for the team, and hopefully we won't have buyers remorse next season. I wish the Canuks (and all the teams) well with their trades and aquisitions as us fans out here want to just see great hockey and Stanley Cup finals. I'd say this year had a little bit of everything…it was exciting for sure.
The only bad thing about Millers contract is the length. 8m for him is good and better than resigning Horvat.
I never understood why bubble team trade away picks, especially in good draft years, especially for old players
The fact that Eriksson was part of the deal just cements the fact that Benning was one of the worst GM’s in NHL history.
That's DiPietro 2.0 levels of buyout.
Was Benning salty on his way out? 😅
Screwed them hard
lol who actually thought it was a good trade at first?
2 million in dead cap space after the cap skyrockets…. This is not a horrible buyout at all.
As horrible as the Cam Neely trade turned out to be for the Canucks, you could always argue that it seemed reasonable at the time the trade was made, but just unfolded in the worst possible way after the fact.
In contrast, the OEL trade made absolutely no sense whatsoever on the day of the trade! The Erickson, Rousell, and Beagle contracts were coming off the books in only a year's time. Whereas the OEL contract was a potential albatross for years to come. On top of that, OEL's play was already starting to regress. If all that wasn't bad enough, they throw away a 9th overall pick in the deal. Jim Benning was a complete IDIOT in making this deal!
So as imperfect a solution as this may have been, Alvin and Rutherford did the right thing by cutting their losses here. Something they wouldn't have had to do had this bonehead trade not been made in the first place.
You thought OEL was a top 4 dman when the Canucks got him? He had literally just came off one of the most disastrous defensive seasons in recent memory. Dude was a shadow of his former self. That was a shit deal for Vancouver the minute it happened.
This was a great play by Vancouver OEL is an overrated and overpaid player I’m happy we get some money saved by getting him out
“The Canucks said screw the future what have you got for me right now”
So a 2 million dollar cap penalty in years 5 through 8 is screwing the Canucks future? That’s hardly the case, the cap ceiling will have raised a ton by then
I feel like Rutherford is calling the shots and using Allvin as the figurehead. He brought him over from PIT because he isn't going to challenge JR's moves. At least Dubas made Spezza AGM in PIT so Spezza doesn't take the hit for potentially bad moves.
It sucks cause OEL hasn't played on good teams around him. Hell he's only been to 2 real playoffs out of the 13-14 seasons he's been in the NHL
The Canucks are a joke. It’s very sad being a Canucks fan. One of the worst teams in the nhl
The best way to be a Vancouver fan is to not be one. Dumpster fire that never extinguished
Conor Garland is a good player, love watching him. Battles hard for pucks and plays hard. OEL is a shell of his former self.
to recoup dollars…. i think this means JT miller is gone. maybe Pecsi and Drury from CAR?
Random question bro, you a flames fan? Since the name Johnny Hawkey haha
I think keeping him would have been better. That term is a huge commitment so I get why the felt like they had to do it, but was it actually a good idea?
you have to take the money out of it. Is OEL better then what they could get with him off the roster. He isnt. Hes dead money. Looks like loui erickson at this point. They really are just looking at freeing up cap space. They need it and by the time the cap problem becomes a problem the cap will be way bigger. Maybe do some reading before you start talking about this. Miller will be fine for 5 years at least.
One of the worst trades in history of the Canucks and maybe the league. Anyone with any foresight could see how this was going to turn out.
I would hate to be a canucks fan
What a great deal for OEL!
