  1. I love Hellebuyck and am not opposed to acquiring him but the trade and the deal he signs has to be heavily in our favor

  2. Tony_Cappuccino

I am potentially interested, but he’s gotta buy into the whole team building thing that we’ve been growing. Jack, Nico and now Bratt on good value contracts, and it all goes out the window if we sign helle to $9m. And we still gotta sign timo.

  3. ancedactyl

Whether we get him or not it’s nice that players are seeing us as a destination/contender.

  4. IsstvanIII

Love the goalie but he’s not going to take a discount to play here unless he strongly believes he’d make us cup favorites. And we’d prob have to move VV.

Lol we are on a Vezina caliber goalie’s short list of teams to sign an extension with. Things I never thought I would ever hear.

This would be quite the answer to the question mark we still have in net. Confident Fitz is going to make decisions keeping the long term in mind.

Anyone have a link to the actual source material? This seems like a guy reporting on someone else’s report and I’m curious if there’s any further context as that stuff is always lost in translation.

  7. Vaderaziel

I would be surprised if we found a way to get this done. But it should definitely be considered.

  8. roothockey

I’m curious what a “team friendly” deal would be that Fitz would be comfortable with

  9. InstructionNo3616

This would put us over the top.

  10. MartysBetter29

STAY AWAY. I seriously think this would be a huge, huge mistake.

  11. chefboleson

akira is him sign for dirt or ur missing the wagon connor

  12. rapier999

Are we comfortable with his age? He’d be a great player to kick off the contract, but how many seasons of peak form are we likely to get from him? Three or four? And if he’s signed to a deal in that $8-9m range for 8 years, the period when he’s 36, 37 and Jack is still in his twenties would be painful for us.

  13. themakiexperiment

I genuinely believe we have something special in Akira. I would take the risk to just run him and VV

  14. AGOEsLois

Huge no to that cap hit. It would make us very cap-strapped and spending that much on a goalie is a very big risk. He’s had a very healthy career, but there’s no telling when he’ll eventually fall off the cliff especially considering the amount of games he’s already played and that he’s on the other side of 30.

  15. Mr7three2

Please no. Wrong side of 30 and gonna cost a ton

  16. lobsterdog666

paying a goalie 9+million is a sure fire way to fuck your cap up permanently.

  17. specifichero101

The building of this team has been pretty careful and done properly. Chasing a 31 year old UFA goalie is the exact way to fuck up that momentum. It might work out and he somehow wins a cup, but much more likely that his contract hinders roster moves and hurts depth while not winning any more games than league average tandem would.

Depending on trade price, I do this deal & signing all day long. Hellebuyck makes this roster a championship roster.

For age concerns – PDOcast had a good discussion today about Hellebuyck & that his game will likely age well + fit in nicely for the devils system.

For contract concerns – the salary cap is projected to go up a lot in the next few seasons& the devils will have 2.5M of dead cap off the books by 24-25.

  19. I’d love Helley on this team however I can’t pay him 9.5 million aav. The Devils will be incredible capped strapped and I’d hate to not be able to sign L. Hughes or Nemec long term or heck maybe Holtz if he turns into why they drafted him. If they can get him to take a buzz cut then maybe. But very dollar matters at this point for this team so Fitz has to be super careful.

Helleybuck got 6×6.16 which was hefty cause of term

Gibson is next comparable as he got a massive 8×6.4

With Helleybuck he’s looking at Price, Vasi and Bobrovsky as comparable

Especially with the cap going up later it makes sense that he’d want to bank now

With Helleybucks healthy and consistent career on top of the good numbers I say pay the man

Plus he’s got 40 playoff games to boot

Now I’m not saying I want to pay the guy 10 mill when he turns 38 but it’s kind of hard to argue why we shouldn’t pay him 7×10 like Bobrovsky

If he hits free agency , he’s making that money. Makes any team an immediate cup contender (except Winnipeg) but you get the point.

So do we spend that money or nah?

I’m not sure why we shouldn’t. We are flexible because with Schmid and Daws as our 2nd and 3rd option these are rfas only after next season.

There is a hope that we get lucky. For one , he might simply want out of Winnipeg. But with NJ being a hot destination for the 1st in fucking ever, if he feels he can compete here there’s possibility he’d take a partially team friendly deal.

No goalie has actually signed thru the age of 37. So if the guy signs for like 9×7, that’s honestly pretty good.

Anything 60m or less is a home run.

  21. Scaramoosh1

Started with Corey Crawford retiring halfway through our first practice and now we here

  22. ilovemyar15

Vasilevskiy commands that kind of price because he is a proven cup winning goalie. Compare that to Hellebuyck, who has never won a cup and had a .886 save percentage in his last playoff series. He is also 30 years old (2 years older than Vasilevskiy) and there are a thousand different examples of goalies losing their magic after making big career moves.

That being said I would LOVE to have Hellebuyck on the Devils, but not at anything near 9.5 AAV. If he is willing to sign for 5 years at ~7 AAV and we don’t have to move core/near core pieces in the trade, I would have absolutely no complaints. He can either get the bag and secure the last big contract in his career or he can take a team friendly contract to maximize his chances at being a champion. I wouldn’t blame him for either.

  23. Harrisonmonopoly

I don’t want anything to do with this.

  24. pretzelogically

We’re like the hottest girl in the room right now. We can pick whoever we want at this point.

  25. surrendertomychill

The days of being on everyone’s no-trade list feel like ages ago now!

Don’t think I’d want this guy if he insists on Vasi money, since he is 30. But it feels nice to actually be an option for elite FAs.
