Is there a path for Valtteri Puustinen to make the team out of training camp?



Kyle Dubas has officially made his first roster move as Penguins President of Hockey Operations and even though it’s a small one, it still matters. He signed Valtteri Puustinen to a one-year deal on Tuesday as he was expected to be one of the team’s RFAs. Hunter looks at how he’s been the best player on a really bad WBS team and how he’s at least going to be one of the first call-ups when the Penguins inevitably have their first swath of injuries. Hunter also analyzes what his chances are of making the team out of training camp considering there may not be a lot of spots up for grabs if Dubas fills out the forward depth like he intends to. Also: What is his ceiling? Hunter looks at that before moving on to another UFA d-man target in Shayne Gostisbehere. He dives into the numbers that he put up when he reached Carolina and how he got back to basics while playing in their system. He then analyzes what the Penguins would be getting from him before discussing what type of partner he needs to play with. Also: Do the Penguins need more offense from their backend? Hunter tackles that question before ending the show with a discussion about Oliver Ekman-Larsson and if the Penguins could take a cheap flier on him.

    I don't think ghost would be a good idea at this time. Don't see petry actually being moved so you really don't have a defensive dman for ghost. They should go for graves 100% to replace dumo. Hanifin would be a great add as well but that's dreaming lol.

    AHL production often doesn't equal NHL production. But Puustinen is putting up those numbers on a very bad team, with underwhelming centers. I'm really curious how he'd look on the wing of a center with real offensive skill. The catch, of course, will he ever get that chance with Sullivan calling the shots? I really hope Dubas wants younger players to get significant minutes, and will hold Sullivan's feet to the fire if he's making roster decisions based on tradition/loyalty instead of merit.

    Everything you said make sense.Good job I think young players would be Poehling,Nylander,Oconnor be 4thline all young 3rd line comes from free agency maybe alot of Toronto players Bunting,Kerfoot,Accari.
