Evan Bouchard’s next contract will dictate so much of what happens in the off-season for the Edmonton Oilers this year. I float why I’m comfortable with the reported numbers, why Bouchard has earned said numbers and how it’s likely not to break the budget!

There are two critical factors that many forget. Leon and Connor. Leon can be resigned in 24/25. Connor in 25/26 if I understand correctly (actually theoretically just before those seasons actually begin). Much of the extra cap will be going to them. Honestly Leon's been on the biggest bargain contract for 8 years now. He's going to want more. A lot more. He deserves it. Connor, we want to keep Connor we pay, probably the max.
Bouch is currently paid $863,333 plus performance bonus's (he got 850K of that this year). He's basically at 1.715 right now. He has no arb rights and is an RFA. The biggest thing he has for leverage is someone giving an offer sheet for him. Then the Oilers would be in put up or shut up situation. Right now they can give him an offer of maybe 2 to 2.5 million (plus, perhaps, some performance bonus's) for say 2 years. It gets us into a better cap situation. Gives the organization 2 more years to make sure he's what he's supposed to be and his D tighten's up under the guidance of Ekholm and Manson. The only way to go longer than a 2 year bridge would involve money and Bouch and his management willing to sign for 4 at that price. He'll be a UFA in 2027. Four years walks him to that. It also lets us lock in (hopefully) Connor and Leon. Hyman's contract ends in 27/28 and Nuge's in 28/29. Kane's ends in 25/26 (without extension). Nurse in 29/30. Bouch will be in his prime at the UFA stage (probably) and hopefully we can afford some forwards, Bouch, and some good D plus promoting within.

If Schwartz is sent packing that would be great news. We get outstanding goalkeepers, he ruins them. They move on to become top tenders.
Skinner needs to be a backup tender, as was seen in playoffs.
