The Leafs’ ‘Core 4’ looks set to return but what is the missing piece in Toronto? TSN Hockey analyst Dave Poulin discusses whether it’s goaltending or a defenceman that Toronto needs to add.
The Core 4 cannot be fixed. The ONLY option is to break them up in a big way…and not negotiate salaries that leave little room to bring in decent players outside of that group. It will only get even worse if the Leafs negotiate even higher salaries for some of the core 4 players. It's just getting to be plain stupid, if that happens. The core 4 ARE the problem.
I don't think Samsonov is good enough! His glove hand is VERY weak ! I think Grubauer is the guy Leafs should be trying to get ! Joe Woll IS good enough to be back up. In fact, I think Woll should get 40% of the games beginning from the opening Bell ! Maybe even 50% Mike.

Who tf was he watching? He's clearly capable of being a backup, and there's at least 10 other teams who'd start Woll for at least 30 games.
Toronto media (and management) are soo afraid to develope their own goaltenders so they rely on overpaid big name injury prone goalies no one else wants to touch.
The leafs will never win the cup with the way it's constructed, the Vegas way is the perfect model,the leafs can win it if it's giving to them not by competing for it ,it's a sad situation

They need a goalie better than the opposition. We've always had the inferior goalie.
the problem is Tavares is on the Core 4. his contract is why it is such a disaster with the cap.
Tell Auston that he's expected to also play physical would be a good start. He invokes fear in nobody.
Sammy and Woll are fine as our 1# and #2 goalies. The people in front of them are the problem. Leafs gotta beef up their D.

It’s not the defence. It’s not goalie. It’s not even the coach. It’s scoring. Despite being built around the “talented” Core 4, they couldn’t score.
