Okay. I get it. The Detroit Red Wings are not going to draft Alexis Lafreniere, as they’ve dropped down to the 4th overall pick at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. The Draft Lottery was cruel to Detroit, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t have a chance at getting a good player. At the very least, let’s move forward thinking about the positive implications for this team, shall we?
The current NHL rankings for the 2020 NHL Draft go as follows:
1st) Undetermined team
2nd) Los Angeles Kings
3rd) Ottawa Senators (via San Jose Sharks)
4th) Detroit Red Wings
5th) Ottawa Senators
6th) Anaheim Ducks
7th) New Jersey Devils
8th) Buffalo Sabres.
The draft is stacked with guys like Alexis Lafrenière at the top, with Quinton Byfield, Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti, Jake Sanderson, and Yaroslav Askarov rounding out the top 10. The rest of the draft has a ton of great talent as well, like Anton Lundell, Kaiden Guhle, Dawson Mercer, Braden Schneider, Dylan Holloway, Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary, Justin Barron, Jack Quinn, John-Jason Peterka, William Wallinder, Rodion Amirov, Jacob Perreault, Seth Jarvis, Ty Smilanic, Jeremie Poirer, Noel Gunler, Mavrik Bourque, Lukas Reichel, Tyler Kleven, Ridly Greig, Justin Sourdif, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jake Neighbours, Luke Tuch, Helge Grans, Jan Mysak, Michael Benning, and Antonio Stranges.
The former NHL Draft Lottery odds, went in order as the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks (Senators), Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes (Devils), Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks (Devils), Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs (Hurricanes), Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders (Senators), Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes (Rangers), Pittsburgh Penguins (Wild), Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning (Sharks), Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins (Ducks).

twice u mentioned salary cap era. point made the first time . great voice though . and glad your not saying um
Definitely the Wings DID NOT tank the season on purpose. Not only are they rebuilding, but they have been devastated by injures the last couple of years. The NHL draft lottery is a joke, however, plain and simple.
Wings don't have a superstar. Hell, they don't even have a star. How could anyone claim the Wings intentionally tanked? They literally just can't
We're not gaining anything by losing Lafrenier…
I don’t think us Wings fans can be too mad (yet). The odds never changed and we had the best shot at one. We were just more likely to pick four. I think the real anger will be when a 100 point team picks #1. I think the Wings are going to get a great player. I like Raymond myself. Wings fans will get their number one pick eventually, we’re going to be a lottery team for quite some time.
My Red Wings defense was terrible we need another top defensive player! Fuck the lottery! How does a playoff contender deserve a first overall pick?
Drysdale is who I like.
I honestly believe this is good for the draft reguardless of if they tanked purposely or not. This shows teams even if you tank, you’re probably not gunna get the first overall anyways so if you suck you suck whether finishing 4th worst or dead last you could still get that top pick. So mid as well get some wins if you can so your fan base doesn’t just boycott your games and throw jerseys on the ice like what happened in Toronto 4 years ago.
I understand why they’re upset they had the best “chance” to get the first overall but that’s still only at 25% or something like that there’s a 75% chance another team gets it those arnt super great odds. And I believe the league structured it this way to avoid purposeful tanking because they’ve been tweakingnthe draft regularily, and it’s not good for the league if a team purposely tanks. Ticket sales are ticket sales and if a team is purposely tanking nobodies going to pay to see their team lose unless you’re a leaf fan of course.
I would love to be a fly on the wall, I don’t think ANY team goes up to their players and says “you guys suck I want you guys to play even worse so we lose every game and get the first overall pick, because that first overall pick could potentially take their job. These players purposely tanking could ruin their careers. Or atleast put a damper on it, nobody wants a loser on their team who’s giving no effort, cause teams will see the lack of effort they were told to give and no team will want them for that. I’m not talking first line players I’m talking the 3rd and forth line role players , 3rd pairing d , they will look at your metrics and if it shows you got zetmro effort and bad metrics cause you’re tryna let the other team win, they’re not taking you in a free agency etc.
I purposely believe intentional Tanking comes from the owner in the end they’re the ones with job security a GM a coach will both lose their jobs if a team finishes dead last with the worst record in the salary cap era the majority of the time, so they’re not going to purposely do it, I believe it’s the owner that tells the GM what they want , ex: move guys at the deadline that are helping the team win, use unproven minor league player because they wanna see “ how they’re gunna handle the NHL, I believe once the owner gives their views and what they wanna do with the team it’s impossible for a GM to go get that team help to try and win. I believe it’s solely on the owner level, and the GM gets roped into it
I'm calling it now, but the 1st overall pick is gonna be to the Penguins or the Oilers and I am gonna be even more pissed off as a Wings fan. If it was Ottawa, San Jose or even New Jersey who got the 1st pick it would have been whatever. But the fact it's gonna be a playoff or near playoff team getting a generational talent like Lafreniere is really disgusting and makes the draft lottery seem rigged.
as a wings fan i was initially furious with dropping to 4 but i did a little reflecting on the lottery and i wasn't as upset because i knew i was going to be able to watch a really good player grow. i want wither rossi or Raymond with number 4 but whatever stevie picks there i will 100% support
Admittedly sour about the draft but what Red Wings’ fan isn’t. Honestly it’s that it’s a “play in” team. Had it been any of the bottom 7 I wouldn’t be nearly as bummed. Statistically we were gonna snag 4th. It is what it is now that I’ve had a few days to calm. Chaos theory is that seeing how Ottawa picks 3&5 why not get the top D guy in Drysdale and then whom ever. That would leave either Stutzle or Byfield. Either would be great at that point. Ottawa could also gamble that Detroit wouldn’t do it and get him at 5. Who knows. If not the usual suspects Rossi, Raymond, Drysdale, or Perfetti. Side note anybody who thinks the Wings purposely tanked this year doesn’t watch the team. They legitimately sucked pretty hard and the injuries didn’t help. Thanks for the positivity LEGO.
I agree with everything you have said
Meh. IMO I don't think we really need forwards in the draft. We already have a good amount of talented young forwards and decent prospects already drafted. From what I saw last season, we need to solidify our defense and get a coach in who can reign these guys in and get them to play cohesively. Everyone LOST THEIR MINDS when Yzerman got Seider. Well, you don't hear anything out of them now. I gotta say, it makes no sense why so many people were all up in arms about it, well it does, because there are those who think mock drafts are god. Yzerman has a chore coming back to Detroit. He has to be as concerned about next year as he does 4-5 years down the road. Cracks me up, everyone is an expert. Well, I am sure there will be a coaching job or two open this year, apply and show us what you got. (not referring to you Lego!)
In a way i hope that Detroit finds a way to draft rossi and askrov because they need both those players exactly as much right now.
Any update on Otto Kivenmaki after that brutal hit last season?? i cant find anything i just remember them saying it was potentially career-ending
Steve Yzerman was taken 4th overall. just sayin
I actually prefer Raymond over Stutzle
Someone in D or a goalie and trade down if it's for a goalie try to get some assets.
Respect the Yzerplan. But on another note, make the damn draft in future equal to all. And you dont do it in a closed room where we cant see it. I want it shown live. Its easy to do. You put 32 balls in a bag, shake it up. Every pull goes right down the list. First pull is #1 on down to #32. This completely eliminates tanking because every single team has exactly the same odds at roughly 3.125% for #1. WTF is so hard about this?
Tanking? that was about the best they could do.
Obviously Stutzle if he drops but I’m tied between Rossi and Perfetti. If Stevie wants a defensemen Drysdale is the obvious choice but I feel like with players like Seider and Hronek they’ll be good enough to where we don’t need to rush a dman pick in the 1st round
Anyone who sais the Wings tanked on purpose are just idiots. This team is the peoduct of the last 10 years of Ken Hollands bad contracts. If u want to see a team that tanked on purpose then just look at the Penguins of the early/mid 2000's. When they tanowd to get Fleury and Malkin and Crosby and Staal. Thats a team that tanked on purpose for a few years
We weren't tanking at all man. We were just that bad. Detroit should have started a rebuild when Nicklas Lidström retired, but nope we kept trying to make the playoffs.
Dysdale with seider on the point.. yes please
Rossi
In alphabetical order Detroit will take one of Askarov, Drysdale, Holtz, Perfetti, Raymond, Rossi or Sanderson.
Looking at who they have on the wings and griffs I think we need a center over a wing anyway for center we really only have Larkin ft and veleno and ras oh their ways up but behind Larkin is neilson Filppula and glendening
Honestly, in the last decade, there's more instances of 4th overall picks not panning out than becoming stars.
I hope they take Drysdale. After blowing it by passing on Hughes perhaps this can lesson the blow.
