🟠 FLASH: Flyers Unveil New Uniforms, New Orange

In the first jersey reveal for the 2023-24 NHL season, the Philadelphia Flyers showed off their redesigned home and road uniforms. The new look includes a return to a darker burnt orange, wider shoulder yokes, and single-color sleeve numbers.

Unfortunately, the refresh is spoiled by a new sponsor ad, whose bright blue has no place on the chest of this sweater.

  1. I'm curious as to who the people are that are going to be buying this and why they'd do so. There are close to no changes besides a glaringly awful color contrasting ad right on the front. Looks like nothing but a downgrade to me. Wouldn't it be better to just get an older jersey?

  2. I don't get putting all the effort into jersey design to then not consider how bad the ad clashes. Black letters instead of blue would be fine, I just don't understand why teams don't seem to care about that aspect.

  3. Ending on a downer note, I mean, it's just telling the truth – the ad looks like ass. If the text was in white, leaving only the tiny Blue Cross insignia in the corner in blue, it would still be a bad look, but it wouldn't be so obnoxious. As is, it rivals the big green TD patch on the Canucks' black-red-gold thirds for maximum ugliness.

Circling back to the uniform proper, it's alright. It's a nice way to blend in some retro style without just going straight 1980s-90s throwback. The thing I like best is the change to the collars, being solid black (the piecemeal coloring on the outgoing white Adizero jersey was particularly bad). The thing I like the least is the persistence of the contrasting nameplates. It stopped being cute when the 70s-styled jerseys stopped being alternates or special event unis and became primaries.

  4. I think advertisers should be required to adapt their logos to the team theyre sponsoring, so we dont end up with an awful contrast like this. As a Bruins fan, the idea of an ad on the jersey is made less offensive with how well Rapid7's logo matches the color scheme.

  5. The arm numbers look cheap. Idk why they had to change that. Everything else look good. Fuck that ad tho

  6. Yeah, IDK why they went with sherbert orange when they went retro. This kinda splits the gap between the OG and the 80/90s looks. The attrition of waist stripes continues.

I like them. Although, sans waist stripe the logo feels really high up and there's a tone of blank realestate. I find myself tilting at the crest thinking ,"is that what they always looked like? It looks weird"

  7. A big problem I have with jersey ads are the coloring, i’m sure some companies would be flexible to make it look different for the team it has a partnership with, but hopefully the jersey becomes the star and not the ad, besides, the white one looks better anyways

  8. beautiful video and nice changes made by the flyers. the P-flyer symbol is iconic. glad also they went back to the burnt orange.

  9. Hope NHL will end as Russian Hockey League start – when players jerseys looks like bulletin board on gas station. I think even window cleaners had their ads, somewere on back, just under armpits.

  10. YES! What a nice little upgrade! I like the burnt orange way better. It’s just a prettier color that screams less into your face. (Also I guess you could argue that screaming in your opponents faces is a good thing on the ice) I also like the erasure of the white stripe on the bottom and think that all in all this was cleaned up really nicely! And it was all done without „forcing“ a „modern“ look on us cause they mainly did it with things inspired by / taken from the past.
    So yeah, I’m a fan!

  11. Like the jerseys, HATE the ad. I don't care if the ad is blue, white, black, whatever – it makes the jersey a cluttered mess and it makes any jersey look & feel less iconic. Sucks that every inch of real estate has to be covered in ads these days.

  12. what bugs and grinds my gear about these ad patches are they should be able to change the color of the ad patches. Companies have branding guides for this specific reason! just changing it to a black or white.

  13. I will seriously never understand why people have to continually bring up the ads on jerseys. I have watched a lot of hockey since teams have been wearing ads, and I can't recall a single time where I found myself noticing the ads instead of the game play. So they are definitely not distracting. Plus any jersey that you buy won't even have the ad. So I really don't think they are an issue at all. Seems like people just want something to complain about these days.

  14. Dont like the giant stripes on the sleeves. Hate the nameplates. Hate the obnoxious ad on the dark jerseys.

  15. Love the sleeve numbers!!! It is getting a lot of hate from the "everything has to match and be symmetrical" crew. I like when teams go outside the box and even have different home and road designs. You don't hear these same people complaining about Montreal's sweaters. These Flyers uniforms are a good mix of all the eras, and the seemingly subtle details really help the overall character of the design. I just wish they changed the sock pattern to the early 80's design, with a single-stripe each of orange and black.

  16. 2:15 You had to do it, didn't you. You had to remind us that the NHL is switching to that bootleg sweatshop garbage.

  17. Duller orange . . . Yep, dull, boring, no pop, no flash, no dash. Like a Halloween pumpkin in mid-November.

People think that matching, or coordinate, or even worse like "go together" (ugh, hate that phrase), become engineers. The most tasteless boring people on the planet.

I spent over 40 years in a graphic design field. The best things I ever came up with had that one color, just a little bit of it, that would make people wince . . . until they saw it. You may not even notice it, but that's what makes it pop.

I guess we have to go through a boring phase once in a while so real artists can be appreciated again.

  18. OMG, OMG, OMG!! I HATE the nameplates!! Always have always will. Take it away and … smooch. PERFECT!

  19. They should have removed the block lettering. The block looks bad, just letters would have been fine. I can read the letters, the block isn't necessary.

  20. The more I see the jerseys, the more I like them honestly. Definitely need to get one this season!

  21. They look nice; the darker orange looks a lot better. Would've liked to see the black jersey revert to same style.
