Yeah that kinda makes a lot of sense. I totally understand not wanting to load your back end up with undersized defensemen and if they believed in Mete I totally understand not taking Hughes. Obviously in hindsight it doesn’t look great but the logic is actually pretty sound.
What this doesn’t explain is why on earth they took KK over Tkachuk? To me that’s the more egregious part of this.

Tbf Hughes wasn’t ranked #3 in the draft rankings. If the Habs had gone for BPA at the time, they probably would have selected Zadina based on most rankings

FWIW this is why I don’t have a particular issue with “doubling” up on an archetype of a player like that.
If Sandals-Pokémon or whatever is the best player at 11 then take him. Prospects don’t develop linearly and neither do pro rosters.
“We have Hughes! We don’t need two of them!” Is assuming a lot. That the kid develops into a Hughes clone, Hughes is here his full contract, that it wouldn’t be awesome to have 2 Hughes on 2 pairings making great breakout passes, controlling the blueline and scoring, etc
Vaguely reminds me of those “with Dahlen, Palmu and Lind in the pipeline this team is set at wing!” posts that were like 12 months before the team made a bunch of moves to get NHL wingers onto the roster.

Thank you Victor Mete ♥️
draft BPA
Sounds Benning like
“that’s a small body gentleman, a small body.”
[Kinda suspected for a while](https://www.reddit.com/r/canucks/comments/exaxkh/this_interview_with_montreal_canadiens_head_of/). It was odd back then and only got worse. Lucky for us.
