New York Rangers turn in a shockingly lackluster performance in Game 7 and get what they deserve

Seemingly riding high after a clutch season-saving Game 6 win, the Rangers turn in an appallingly lethargic performance in Game 7, a 4-0 loss to the New Jersey Devils. Is Gerard Gallant on the hot seat after the Rangers blow a 2-0 series lead and essentially no-show Games 4, 5 and 7? Artemi Panarin plays the worst hockey of his NHL career. How did it go so wrong for the Breadman, and what does the future hold for the Blueshirts’ highest-paid player?? No one besides Igor Shesterkin had any consistency in this series. Two things can be true: The Devils played excellent hockey, and the Rangers pulled a complete no-show. Episode 818.

  1. They have to ship Bread in the off season – if they can. I've been a huge fan but he's not worth the money. Maybe they can get a couple of good prospects in return.

  2. This ranger team needs grit and fiesty players ,they have been soft for years and can you please add some speed

  3. The reason Panarin is so bad in the playoffs is that he’s weak and his style of play doesn’t work. He likes to skate it up the left side every time stop and wait for a trailer and throw it across the ice. He isn’t given any time or space in the playoffs so he gets knocked off the puck in 1 second. Or he tries to dump and chase and he can’t win board battles.

  4. Why even mention Kane he’s the reason our chemistry left it was all about him and where we could use him . We all worshipped him and he definitely was not even a smidge of how he was !

  5. The issue in this game was that after the Fox flub the team gave up. The game ended on that play

  6. they ended rebuilding mode too early now they don't even have decent prospects in their pool this team isn't talented once all the free agents are gone top 6 don't know how to keep puck in offensive zone. puck possession in offensive zone none of them are good outside of kaako nobody plays playoff type game.

  7. Agree. Felt the same way. Zero sense of urgency. Team was flat in games 3, 4 and 7. Unacceptable. Disgusting and disappointing. Fox was an unreal disappointment. Never saw that coming.

  8. This is the only Rangers fan podcast/YouTube channel with some objectivity. Every other one is just guys bitching and moaning like babies.

  9. Last year it took me days to get over the loss this year to your point I wasn't even phased during the game because after the first 10 minutes I knew we were done. The devil's wanted it more and they earned it. Panarin has to go find a way to move him. And I'm also good with Gallant going if you can't find a way to motivate your team you shouldn't be in NHL coach

  10. Was it really shocking though? This is a team with non existent system and several very poor puck movers on the back end. Statistically the NYR were among the worst teams in the league this year at exiting their zone with possession. 23rd in xGF% and bottom 10 in 5v5 offense generation. They’re just a bad 5v5 team and that’s magnified against a team like NJD that are elite 5v5.

Offense wins in the playoffs and we literally have no offense for 2 years. Just opportunistic finishing from star players in spite of awful coaching. Until NYR stop trying to pretend it’s the 90s, they aren’t winning shit. Igor saved 8.6 goals above expected…that’s unfathomable that they lose this series. But that’s what happens when you have no way to exit your zone or get through the neutral zone. Transition play=offense. We have none of that due to poor systems+ anchors like Trouba/mikkola/Schneider/Harpur. Jones was the only NYR D man other than Fox to grade as an above average puck mover. Our biggest deficiency and instead we played Harpur for 50 games

  11. Hi John. Rangers fan for 50 plus years. First time seeing your podcast.
I agree with just about all of your observations. However, Kane and Panarin rely heavily on support. They can’t be effective without their supporting cast creating space for them. They’re both excellent puck handlers, but they need options for passes or lanes to shoot. They got almost no help on either front. You can’t expect too much on the defensive side of the puck from either of them, but that’s not what they’re paid for. But…if you watch Panarin (especially) he applies good back pressure, he’s just not overly physical. That said, they both are guilty of forcing plays and not getting the puck deep when it’s not there.
IMO, the series was lost because the Rangers played with no jam in the last 5 games. The simply weren’t physical enough. In fact, they weren’t physical at all for most of the series. Can’t slow them down without hitting them. All sticks and no bodies is a recipe for disaster. Especially in the playoffs. You may lay blame for that on the coaches, but I don’t think that’s fair. These guys are professionals and should be responsible for their own existence. Gallant, when he was a player, I’m sure didn’t need his coach to get him ready. He played every game breathing fire. I feel the team, as a group, decided to mail it in. What motivation could they possibly need besides the fact that it’s game seven? They shouldn’t need Gallant to motivate them. Unfortunately, he’ll probably get fired because that’s what GMs do. That would be a mistake, IMO.
Great show. I’ll be tuning in from now on.
    Cheers

  12. It's one thing to blame the players – but GG and the rest of the coaching staff deserve at least as much of the blame. Game by game, Ruff came up with tactical changes to negate whatever the Rangers had been successful with. Game by game, aside from some line juggling, GG came up with nothing to negate the Devil's tactics. If GG had a plan, other than "play the right way" I couldn't see it.

  13. Fox was terrible. Work out over the summer and get some energy. Messier for coach! They can golf with the Islanders. You do have to tip your hat to the Devils.

  14. Bottom line it’s all about the roster. The construction and chemistry of the roster. They have had Tortarella, AV, Quinn, GG….Lindqvist and shesterkin….and it’s the same song every year. Either they have good defense but they cannot score OR they can score they just are lazy and don’t play defense or with any grit. Rick Nash…St. Louis…Older Kane…Rangers go get high priced veterans, who somehow forget how to play their game when they get to NYR or just are shells of themselves but have not developed any talent in like 20 years…they don’t have a franchise player. They don’t have a player who is a constant threat, they don’t have players who are gritty and tough to handle the physicality of the playoffs. GG isn’t innocent but at some point we ranger fans need to throw the stones at the players, hold them accountable. Devils have 3 cups to our 1…and they haven’t been around as long as Rangers have. Your top guys have to show up….and they didn’t. Panarin doesn’t have space to operate in… it in the playoffs everything is tighter.

  15. As for Mika…I don’t like that he is ALWAYS standing around waiting for a one timer. Most of his goals are the same one timer shot….well in the playoffs standing around waiting for a one timer at the local bus depot won’t cut it. Too much passing where it seems nobody wants to shoot the puck….and spend too much time getting assaulted in our own zone.

  16. Devils deserve credit though. They had the hunger and desire. They wanted it more. Yes they were fast but they were inexperienced…..and isn’t that usually a negative for a team? Wel they went out there and played parking lot hockey.

Rangers need to get their act togther

  17. As a Devil fan, we just had too much speed and not just run and gun offense. We took the game away using our skating just as much to defend and for puck retrieval. It's a high risk high reward system with our D constantly pinching to help maintain possession. When the bounces go our way it's tough to beat.
You guys would have matched up better with just about any other team in the conference.

  18. The Rangers were lucky not to lose this game 7-0 — and that is not even an exageration.

  19. C'mon, Kreider doesn't always give light little pushes….. sometimes he gives the other teams nice soft hugs. Kreider is by far the MOST SOFT, SISSY-WEAK, HEARTLESS, PATHETIC, Hockey players I have ever seen. I just don't understand him. I am not talking about his net front goal's. The rest of his game is terrible. Does he not watch himself on replay of these games?…. It clearly looks like he plays bad on purpose, or throws games, but why?

  20. My observation as a long time rangers fan they ran into a younger much hungrier team who wanted it more. Seems to me that when they acquired tarasenko ang then Kane people were acting like the cup was already theirs. I really think the rangers started believing their own hype. To much resting on their laurels

  21. Artemi Panarin isn't at all the problem. He Is What He Is. It's John Davidson & Jeff Gorton, who are to Blame. Panarin is, Primarily A Playmaker. If those 2 decided to Pay Him, as if He were Wayne Gretzky and Pay Jacob Trouba, as if He were Paul Coffey (when, even given, I like Trouba, He wasn't worth approximately $3+ Million per Season more than Neal Pionk). I don't think that The Rangers should panic. Schmid did Get 2 Shutouts, and, The Devils were, technically, The Favorites in The Season/Series. While I do think that Changes Have To Be Made, I don't think that The Rangers should overreact. I'd say that A Change In Coaching Needs To Be Made, but, Not Gerard Gallant (I'd say, Replace Mike Kelly with Alain Vigneault or The Like, who's Offensive Juggernaut, especially given The Extreme Drop – Consistent Offense) & Change Some Guys (I like Barclay Goodrow as A Player, but, He makes way too much Money, as I've Always said, for A Bottom Liner, and some others). I say Tarasenko should be Signed, but, not at A Ridiculous Amount and Kane Should Be Signed to A Jimmy Vesey Type Contract (He's A Good Player that can Give You A Decent Bottom Line and go Up In The Lineup, as Needed). Let me know what you think.

  22. PS. I like Trouba, but, if it can be done, prior to July 1st, and, He'd Be Willing To Waive, I'm of The View that An Exchange Of The $8M/yr Players (JT Miller and Jacob Trouba) would be Beneficial to Both Players And Teams. JT Miller is A Shoot First (improving on Defense) Player that The Rangers Need. Let me know what you think

  23. LGDDDD!!! 😈🔥🔥🔥🖤 What A Historic Win Against You Guys you could never beat us this year I even knew it when we were down 2-0, HAVE FUN GOLFING 🏌️‍♂️ NEW YORK RANGERS see ya In October when you come out of hibernation! 😤

  24. Rangers just got outplayed it’s not like they didn’t try at all Devils just made the necessary adjustments to outplay the Rangers, after the nerves and jitters were out by Game 3 The Devils were on a mission and they played the better hockey with the adjustments and from Game 3 outplayed NYR every game even in the beginning of Game 6, this series would of been over in 6 if Rangers didn’t get all the lucky power plays LETSSSSS GOOOOO DEVILS!!! 😈🖤🔥🔥🔥

  25. panarin isnt going anywhere unfortunetly,no teams would take him and his bloated contract..1 guy that needs to go is k.miller,he is god awful on defense and he doesnt hit ever.Igor,Vesey,Kreider and even Laffy played well.Gallant needs to go we need a coach that will have every player playing defense and blocking shots.Drury was the clown that kept kravtsov instead of keeping othmann here.Newsflash the Devils will only get better and the Rangers are stuck with a bunch of horrible contracts.

  26. You guys are young so you don't understand. I am almost 70 years old. I know from experience that all the things you are thinking about and are talking about won't make any difference. I have seen so many good Ranger teams go out in the playoffs.

They have only won once in over eighty years. So please take it from me when I respectfully tell you that none of the ideas you have will add up to anything. Nothing. Nada.

The Rangers are cursed. They are. There's no other explanation. They are cursed. And the only reason why they won in 1994 was because the Rangers had the messiah's power to bring home the Cup in the name of Mark Messier. He alone was able to rise above the curse and lead the team to the championship.

You had to be there to understand. You had to see Messier's quote that the Rangers will win Game Six. You had to be there to see his hat trick in that game. You had to see Matheau put in that goal in double overtime in Game Seven at MSG and know that it was Messier that lobbied to have Stephan Matheau come to the Rangers at the trade deadline.

But you could not have been there so you don't understand. Nobody but Mark Messier will ever make a difference for the Rangers.

Read his book and you'll understand why he is the greatest captain in the history of NHL hockey. Messier is the only man who can coach these Rangers to a championship. Nobody else will make any difference and no trades, no new coaches, and nobody but Messier can do it.

Eighty years! EIGHTY YEARS! Eighty years….

  27. It probably was Rangers worst game of the season, game seven should be do or die and they chose the latter.

  28. I am swiss canadian fan from near Toronto…
Also a Devils fans, however your commentary was factual and interesting…

You have a great analytical mind.

    All the best
