The Buffalo Sabres have traded forward Marcus Johansson to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for forward Eric Staal.

This is coming after the Wild got eliminated from the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs; the same Playoffs which the Buffalo Sabres failed to qualify for.

The 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs are involving sixteen teams, which are the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadiens, Carolina Hurricanes, New York Islanders, and Columbus Blue Jackets in the East, and the Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Blues, Vegas Golden Knights, Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes, and Dallas Stars in the West.

The matchups are currently the Golden Knights VS Stars in the Western Conference Finals, and Lightning VS Islanders in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Vegas Golden Knights got eliminated by the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Finals in Game 5.

The eliminated teams of the 2020 NHL Playoffs from the qualifying play-in series are the Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, Nashville Predators, Minnesota Wild, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Florida Panthers.

  1. Staal is a bargain for his stats. Well done Buffalo. He’ll be an excellent assistant captain to Eichel too!

  2. Good deal for both teams because Minnesota gets a younger player in Johanssen who is not as good as staal, but buffalo gets Staal as they need to make a push for the playoffs this year.

  3. I think this is a huge deal for Eichel and for Buffalo, Eichel has a chance at the playoffs, staal is someone who might resign if they contest next year

  4. Hehe.. well.. its a good trade for Buf.
Love Eric Stall when a Hurricane and Skinner fed off of him when they played together.. so chemistry is involved.
Still no fan of Skinner but he played well with Eric who at the time was an elite center and can still may be.
    Skinner!!

  5. Honestly, this is great for both Mittelstadt’s and Cozens’ development. Cozens is probably seen as the teams future 2C and with Staal there, they can afford to start developing Mittelstadt as a winger that can play centre when needed. I think Mittelstadt will be more suited in the NHL as a winger than a centre and this trade allows them to focus on making him a winger rather than pressure him to be a centre while not pressuring Cozens to be the guy right away. Overall big W for the Sabres and great first trade for Adams

  6. wtf you talking about long term potential of Marcus J he's dog and he's not getting any better, bunk trade by the wild Guerin needs a vibe check

  7. I think Wild may trade for Domi or Strome or I don't think they are so confident to get the deal done. Good trade for Buffalo, nice mentor for Mittlestadt and can help Mittlestadt to be the 2C. Wild now have their top 6 winger spots set, I would be curious to see how Wild can find a way to replace Staal

  8. Good trade. Stall is going to infuse some experience and make a decent 2nd line center. It’s going to take more than that for the Sabres to make the cut however.

  9. Johansson might be 6 years younger, but it doesnt guarantee that he will sign with the Wild next year when we will become UFA.

One for one, 1 year contract each, I think it is a steal for the Sabres. Not only Staal is much better but has a cheaper contract. I am still surprised it was a one for one.
