  1. You can't underestimate the impact of how Covid was handled. I'm a US hockey fan who roots for a Canadian team and I always liked when American players went to Canadian teams and did well. The reason the Flames became my team was that when they won the Stanley Cup their leading scorer & second best player (after MacInnis), Joey Mullen, was a guy from my own home town. But after Covid and the way it was handled by the Canadian government, I couldn't blame a player for not wanting to play in Canada. What was especially chilling was during the truckers protest when the government started freezing bank accounts and seizing assets of people involved in a peaceful protest. That's literally Nazi Germany level stuff there. It was the first time here in the US I heard people start to consider Mexico as our more freedom loving and sensible neighbor, and the more desirable place to visit and reside in.

Covid changed everything. Jeff Petry is example #1. He had played his entire NHL career in Canada and had, not long before, signed an contract extension to stay in Montreal. He seemed perfectly happy to play out his career in Canada. So what changed his mind?

BTW, the first player I remember not wanting to play in Canada was Bernie Parent. Kind of the same wife issues as Pronger. Mrs. Bernie thought Toronto was too cold. Or so it was reported in the newspapers at the time.

  2. When I saw Matthews cleaning his nails in the dressing room before game three or four against the Panthers, it just explained everything. Even the tropical and desert American markets, the fans, don’t really know what it means to win the cup.

  3. MONTREAL AND TORONTO HAVE TOO MUCH MEDIA SCRUTINY, OTHER TEAMS? POORLY RUN , CHEAP SMALL MARKET TEAMS… AND IN CALGARY AND DEADMONTON, ADD HORRIBLE WEATHER… GREAT POD CAST.. SPOT ON, PLAYERS DO NOT WANT TO PLAY IN CRAPPY PLACES….

  4. It’s a socialist environment! Trudeau is a commie! Vaxx and tax! Not me but I’d like to ship the fake catholic president up to Canada

  5. Well, the weather in Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton can be tough in the winter. Toronto and Vancouver have warmer winters..

  6. There is a BIG difference between Vancouver/Montreal/Toronto and Edmonton/Ottawa/Winnipeg. Vancouver is gorgeous with very mild weather. Montreal is pretty and has a cool culture. Toronto is a beautiful big city with a banging nightlife. Edmonton/Ottawa/Winnipeg are bland, small cities, with zero culture, nothing to do, and in the middle of buttfuck nowhere.

  7. MARK MY WORDS.. McDAVID WILL BE WANTING OUT OF DEADMONTON… ITS COMING….. JUST WAIT… EICHEL WON A CUP… McDAVID WILL WANT OUT…THE OILERS ARE SO POORLY MANAGED, THEY THOUGHT MIKE SMITH WAS A SOLID GUY FOR A DEEP PLAYOFF RUN.. THE GUY COULD NOT STOP A BEACHBALL… NE WAS EMBARRASSING… JUST AWFUL….

  8. If Canadians really want our teams to be competitive, we need to push our government to change tax laws to 0% for Canadian players. You do that and we will the cup all the time.

  9. Less taxes, more freedom, and less stressful markets with a better track record of success in the modern era. Can't say I blame them.

  10. Don’t forget the tyrannical government obsessed with controlling everyone’s lives. And taxing the super rich out the wazzooo

  11. High taxes, Covid policies, wokeness/p.c., cold, pressure, no normal privacy, not winning a cup, etc, etc……

  12. It’s not a coincidence a Canadian team hasn’t won the cup since 93. Guys not wanting to play in Canada has been an issue for years but I think Covid made it even worse. Tkachuk using his leverage to get out of Canada also did not do Canadian teams any favours

  13. It's just a matter of time before playing hockey becomes an illegal activity within Canada. Deemed an 'extremist' public safety threat. Trade in your stick and skates to the government in exchange for a free set of ping pong paddles and a ping pong ball.

  14. I feel like if the NHL could find a way to equalize taxes for everyone across the board it would go a long way. I realize they don't set tax rates, etc. But maybe they could all pay a certain percentage into a pot which is used to foot the tax bill for all players in both Canada and USA. Just think… you can pay someone less in an American city because taxes are lower, which in a way gives them an edge for star players.

  15. In 1993 almost 80% of the league was made up of Canadian players. In 2023, it’s now just over 40%. Non Canadians do not have the same emotional ties to the country or grow up dreaming to win a cup in Canada. What we witnessed from 84’-90 with seven straight Canadian winners (Edm, MtL, Cal), will unfortunately and most likely never happen again. Canadian cup winners will always be infrequent given the decrease in Canadian players and the increase in the number of American teams.

  16. Im a proud Candaian for life, but i don't play that Canadian team Stanley Cup thing. Unless your favorite team is Canadian then i get it.

Nobody thats a Canadian team fan wants another Canadian team to ever win .
That stuff i feel died after Canada won Gold Medals and the success of the Crosby era.
Canadian hockey fans have felt that feeling of winning a hockey tournament

  17. I think it is a little unfair to blame Americans who want to go play in the US while you extol a Tavares who turned down more money from his former Islanders team to go play for the Leafs, and then released an old picture as a little boy, asleep in his bed – with Leafs sheets and pajamas. He went home. Yes, there was a "I don't want to go to Edmonton" vibe at one time, you even left out Michael Nylander, who supposedly had agreed to terms when his fiancee said "Edmonton? No way" and ended up in DC. But that is a smaller city, further away than most, and colder than most, and they were not good, and they did not have McDavid. I don't hear a lot of "I don't want to go to Toronto or Montral" . Players may prefer their home countries. I'm actually a little surprised more players don't shy away from Montreal due to the language. Sure, most Canadians are bilingual, English and French. But more Swedes likely have English as their second language than French, and US kids may have taken Spanish in high school, not French. So, it would be their THIRD language. Recall the talk that Luke Richardson would have been the Canadiens head coach several years back – except he couldn't speak French?

and a Lindholm not wanting to play in Calgary is NOT not wanting to play in Canada. Could it be a conflict with the coaching? The front office? Style of play? Long term plan? That's one city, one organization

As far as recognition – i am sure that players get recognized in major hockey markets like Buffalo, Boston, and Detroit in the US. A Ny or LA… there are so many celebs walking around those cities, they don't get bothered.

  18. Stop putting up pictures of the snow in Edmonton. It's just as bad in Winnipeg and Calgary and Calgary floods all the time and they have the worst arena in hockey. Don't make this all about Edmonton.

  19. Top 5 reasons to not play in Canada:

    1) Weather
    2) Taxes
    3) Annoying fans
    4) Obnoxious media
    5) American healthcare is better (when you can afford it).

  20. Pandemic and financial topics. You just make 30% more cash if you play in Florida. Or Vegas.

  21. Wait? You never read about Wayne Gretzky going to California? Must not have ever been a hockey fan.

Also, why does Montreal keep finding their way into the Cup Finals from time to time?

  22. There are tradeoffs. The rewards for Canada's higher taxes are things like universal healthcare. Whereas here in state like my state of Texas, you don't pay a income tax to the state government but if you need treatment for a serious illness or injury, good luck, even with all the federal subsidies & assistance programs.

Secondly, players for teams like the Rangers, Islanders, Bruins, Red Wings, Blackhawks, Wild, Devils, Flyers, Penguins, & the 3 California teams are subjected to state income tax rates not that much different from players that play for the Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Canucks, Jets, Flames, Oilers, & Senators. All players no matter what side of the border their teams reside in, still have fork over 45-55% of their earnings in federal taxes to either Ottawa or Washington D.C., in addition to the state/provincial income taxes. I hope you guys don't paint a false sense of fairy-tale where players don't have to fork over at least roughly 1/2 their earnings to tax confiscation from the federal government of Washington D.C.

Thirdly with the exception of the Sharks, Ducks, Coyotes, Golden Knights, Kings, & teams in the southeastern part of the U.S. you can expect to experience cold weather, even periods of snowfall during the winter months, comparable to that in cities in Canada.

Up & until recently, it was only Hurricanes, Stars, & the Lightning the first time around, since the Canadiens won their most recent one back in 1993, who managed to either win the Cup or make it to the Cup Final while playing in traditinally warmer, non-hockey rich markets. Not to mention the fact that if as, at best, the 4th most popular sport in the U.S. it will be so much easier to walk to the grocery store unnoticed when your team shares the same American city/metropolitan area as an NFL, NBA, or MLB team. Hockey wasn't born in the United States, like basketball, football, & baseball was.

You also have to deal with blistering 90-100°F weather in the summer with the humidity in places Florida, Tennessee, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina, & even Missouri for that matter, if you want to "enjoy the off-season weather in the warmer climates"

    There are tradeoffs. Just saying.

  23. When you know Gary Bettman is still the commissioner so a Canadian team winning won’t happen. Players aren’t stupid.
