Idc what y’all say I’m bummed. I get that HuGo didn’t want to pay a premium and we aren’t in the same position as LA, but when is the last time a big name free agent(or almost) said he wanted to come play in Montreal ? PLD is a first line center and a monster in the playoffs, what we’ve been lacking for decades

  2. Sharks9

The second he was willing to go to more than just MTL we lost all leverage. There’s no chance we’d give the pieces WPG would want either since we’re not in win-now mode

  3. ukrainianhab

    I don’t think he’s a 9M + player but it’s still a little crappy. He 10000% wanted to play in mtl.

  4. oReevee

With none of the details known, what’s the Lesson? we don’t know what LA has given up, we don’t know what PLD is being paid.

PLD was only appealing because we assumed he’d come here cheap, when it turned out he wasn’t, no one really cared.

Only real noise I’ve seen about PLD and Habs recently are articles, users who are banned on /r/Habs shitposting on /r/Hockey, and on twitter, which, lol twitter.

  5. Sportsguy1223

This sucks, but it’s understandable Hughes didn’t want to pay the likely price. But it’s been like two years of hearing PLD only wants Mtl now he’s off to LA 😕

  6. ghg1999

Just truly insane that every insider under the sun says he wants to end up in montreal, and hes willing to sign an extension with a team across the continent

  7. campbell_love

Wow, a Québécois player makes it sound like he wants to play in MTL so he gets more money elsewhere. I’ve seen this one before

  8. Longshanks123

If it’s Vilardi and Iafallo plus, that’s basically the equivalent of Dach and Anderson plus for PLD. It’s too much unfortunately.

  9. Capable-Mobile-8260

I’m sure the leafs thought Tavares was all they needed for a cup but all he did was ensure the opposite and screw their cap. This could be a blessing in disguise, 9 mil + a year can go to better places.

  10. bless24

Honestly feel like this is an L for us. I get it, LA’s package is a lot to match (Bergevin can fuck off), but PLD is player that would’ve been perfect for our system. I would’ve delt Dach for him as we’d be lucky if he turned out as good as PLD. Once again we struck out on a potential big UFA/RFA. Some things never change. Can’t wait to draft Reinbacher and ice our team of third liners (except for Caufield and Suzuki, of course) !

  11. Dom9lives

Who cares, we’re not losing any asset and if a bigger bag of money is enough to make him not wanna play here as much as we’ve been told for years, good riddance. I wouldn’t take that over being coached by Marty and potentially winning a cup in Montreal in a few years but hey.

  12. JohnyZoom

I wanted him to come over as a UFA cause he was dreaming of playing for the Habs. Little primadonna can’t wait a year? He can suck on deez nuts. Giving up good assets negate the fact that he’s on the team. Dach for Dubois feels like a lateral move, at best a slight improvement. Dach *AND* Dubois? Now we’re talking

  13. potato_soup303

Well now we have the opportunity to trade with LA for Byfield since they have their 3c’s. Kopitar, Dubois & Danault.

  14. WesMcCauley

Bergevin and not landing a top 6 C in Montreal, name a better duo

  15. Sourlick_Sweet_001

Seriously, just stop talking about PLD.

  16. G_skins31

Another elite center traded in the NHL and it’s not to Montreal. Habs will never get any better if other teams are always one upping us.

  17. MetalOcelot

I would’ve been pumped to get him for free at free agency or even acquire for pennies if he refused to go to any other team. HuGo did the smart thing. Québécois players notoriously have a hard time playing for the Habs (according to Danault about Drouin’s mental health leave and months before he left the team himself) and I was worried anyways that he wouldn’t be able to handle it and he would quit on the team. I wish him luck in LA though because he seems like a nice guy.

  18. Im_Sorry_93

Y’all bummed out but none of you wanted to pay the price (Dach + and 8.5mil +/year). Makes no sense…

  19. BlazeOfGlory72

The second I heard that Dubois was willing to sign an extension with other teams, I knew we were done. We don’t have the assets, or at least the willingness to part with them, to outbid teams like LA and New York.

I know people will say we dodged a bullet, but I’m still disappointed. This team desperately needs another top 6 centre, and Dubois would have been a perfect fit. At this point I guess we just have to hope that Dach can become a legitimate top 6 centre, or that someone takes Michkov ahead of us so we can draft one of the top 4 centres in this years draft, because as is, our centre depth looks like crap.

  20. I honestly think this is a win. I wouldn’t want to give up assets AND sign him to 8M+. He’s a good player but that’s way too much

  21. DJCrocsNSocks

Sucks but I definitely wouldn’t give them what they wanted for him plus it could make us too good too fast

  22. Admirable_Pension_74

The asking price from Winnipeg was just too high. Trading Dach and his reasonable contract for PLD asking $9mil/year is foolish use of the cap.

  23. Hipko75

    Guys another Drouin anyway
Watch he’ll be crying to leave LA soon just like Columbus and Winnipeg

  24. Thaddeauz

Which lesson? Would we be ready to trade something like Anderson, Dach + for a 8-M$ PLD? We will see about the detail of the trade and the extension, but so far that’s seem a lot. I was ready to ignore all the problems he seem to have with all the teams he went to, but not it cost so much to trade and to sign him.

  25. hiptragicallybroken

Ah the summer of Pierre is about to come to an end. Tsk Tsk Tsk

  26. bcgrappler

I don’t hate using assets and cap space to build a team.

I do dislike doing it to early. I don’t think the PLD trade fits our timeline.

Say we do it for futureS and a dman.

Harris, Hutson and our late first/farrell/Anderson

A solid project able 4/5 in harris, a potential star in hutson and a middle 6 winger or a late first or Anderson.

What happens next is we are good enough to be a bubble team and can no longer stockpile picks and get no high picks. Rebuild suicide, we’ve sacrificed 3 pieces of our rebuild and got to a bubblespot.

To me he was a UFA signing or nothing from a best case scenario standpoint.

  27. Ali_knows

Hard pass seriously. So many red flags.

  28. great_save_luongo

The backtracking all of you are doing about PLD is absolutely hilarious. For almost a year all I’ve seen on Habs social media is fan after fan after fan talking about PLD like he’s the best player in the world and floating the most ridiculous and insulting trade scenarios with the Jets. Now that’s he not signing with you suddenly he’s not worth it or doesn’t fit your timeline. Come on now.

  29. If he didn’t come here as a UFA it wouldn’t make sense for the Habs, the price is too high.

    I wouldn’t trade a thing for him.

  30. Lord_Andross

The only move that makes sense is to wait till you can pick up pld as a free agent. Anything other than this os you idiotic

  31. tarikkisija

Meh.I would gladly send Dach + Anderson

  32. Habs_Apostle

Ironic Bergevin snatching a top six center from us. Obviously, it would have been nice to land him; it would have significantly accelerated the rebuild. Oh well, stings, but what are you going to do?! At least we’ll be able to put the rampant speculation behind us and can now just focus on the draft. Hopefully, this is made official soon. Let’s move on…

  33. RIP to the billions of “Habs future lines” posts that had PLD in them like it was a done deal.

  34. paul_33

If he wanted to be a hab he’d wait till free agency. End of story let’s move on

  35. EducationalStatus533

Looks like we’ll have to rely on our secret weapon… wishful thinking!” 😅

  36. lyme6483

This is beyond brutal. You finally have a young high end talent wanting to play here, and they piss it away. News flash this isn’t any different than the Dach trade. Trading for PLD is not a “win now move”.

  37. TK21879

He never had ANY intention to come here. Same as all the rest. Unless they’re a washed up player on a very tail end of their career, they’re simply not coming ANYWHERE NEAR Montreal.

Even if we draft like gods, we’re simply not going to be true contenders in the current NHL. There’s just too many things stacked against us.

Sorry to be all doom and gloom, but it’s just how I see it…

  38. zeddyvedder

LA can have him. Carry on with the plan, Mr. Hughes…

  39. UniverseHelpDesk

If he really wants to play in Montreal, he will be coming to Montreal. If he doesn’t come to Montreal, he doesn’t really want to play in Montreal. It’s that simple.

He could tell LAK, I’ll sign with you for one year and then hit the market, and then LAK would probably not pay the price. If LAK pays the price, it’s because he commits long term. If he commits, then HuGo has no reason to get into a trade competition with LAK because PLD isn’t worth the package WPG is asking for.

All the pictures of him in Montreal with Caufield and stuff is just a way to milk to the Montreal rumors so that WPG and his agent can maximize their own return.

We’re two years away from completing the rebuild, barring a pleasant surprise next year, I’m not breaking up my core of young players to bring in a red flag that never scored more than 70 points a season. I’ll take him at a fair price, nothing else.

  40. velikost-commander

Thank God. Dubois would have killed us

  41. JourneyToArcana

I’m at peace with it. Truthfully, I expected it when Monahan signed his one-year. Sometimes, the timing doesn’t work out. PLD could have really screwed Winnipeg by walking himself to UFA. Instead, it looks like they’ll recoup real assets for him, and rightfully so. And every player is a shift away from the end of their career. If he can sign a long-term deal and have that guaranteed paycheck, he’s making the right decision for his family.

In 4 years, it’s possible that LA’s window closes and they look to trade PLD to get assets, and a deal between the Kings and Habs will make sense. Or maybe it never happens. He’s not the guy who turns us from rebuilders to contenders. He might make us a bubble team. I’m happy the management team is showing patience.

  42. 2ndpass

It sucks this wont happen for us but I’m good with the way it went down. From all accounts Hughes did his part and inquired, likely made an offer and held to it.

As much as I think he would be a great fit, it’s not a deal we need to force right now and screw up our salary structure and assets. If the return or the salary were deemed too much then we should walk.

  43. Emer1929

If PLD really wanted to play for the Habs he would of signed for 1 year with the Jets this year and joined the Habs next season.

  44. Studly_Wonderballs

Finding it weird how other hockey fans think this is the perfect time to try and dunk on Habs fans.

Every Hab fan I knew said pretty much the same thing, it would be cool to have PLD but we’re not paying out the ass to get him.
