Avalanche Don’t Wait to Address Huge Need. Make a Trade with Nashville for Ryan Johansen.

We knew the Colorado Avalanche needed to address the 2C position. We just didn’t expect it to happen so quickly!

The Avalanche wasted no time addressing the team’s biggest need this offseason when they acquired Ryan Johansen from the Nashville Predators for UFA Alex Galchenyuk. Nashville is also soaking up 50% of Johansen’s contract, which means the Avs are only on the hook for $4 million a year for the next two years.

It’s a great move any way you slice it for Colorado. Johansen is a big body and when healthy can score at a rate you want in a 2nd line center. He’s also fantastic at faceoffs, which we all know the Avs have struggled with in recent years.

What does this mean for someone like JT Compher? Not much in all reality. The Avalanche still wants to keep him around and will likely try to.

We also take a look at the Avs preseason schedule which was announced, and discuss the NHL doing away with all specialty warm-up jerseys.

  1. I would love to hear what you think about Nylander for Devon Toews. It seems to be something that people are discussing.

  2. I was a big fan of RyJo when he was with the Blue Jackets (back when most people in Ohio didn't even know they had an NHL team). I thought the Preds would really improve when they took him but they really didn't for whatever reason and he seemed like he took on a bit of a goon role. I do think he should excel again in the Avs system and I'm pretty excited to see what happens. RyJo will have to change his jersey number. I hope the Avs keep Compher, I think he has some intangible qualities that fits the Avs perfectly. Go Avs! 🥂

  3. A bit of a reclamation. If a division rival trades with you, they didn't have a high opinion of him. Listened to Trotz rake him over the coals in an off season interview saying he can't skate with speed after his Achilles injury.

  4. Something doesn’t sit right about this trade. I’m waiting to see if he has recovered from his Achilles hill injury.

  5. To me that’s Betman is an idiot,,, no correction a puppet,, because of a handful of players , you had to scrap the whole thing? If my employer supports something and I do t wanna support it that’s fine , but I have to take that day unpaid, why isn’t that happening, you don’t have to participate but put your $ where your mouth is! Betman and the owners that run this league are still back in the 50s and 60s , they are considering bringing back people like Bowman and Quenville, and don’t get me started on the ones who got away with the Chicago crap, (Bergevin, Cheveldaoff) put putting some jerseys on for pride that’s disruptive,,, if Betman was a real commissioner he would of stood for the right thing , but he’s more worried about cashing his millions and putting himself in the hall of fame( what a laugh)

  6. I am so sad and dismayed at the NHL for squashing all the special warm up jerseys. As a person who has lost a grandma and a cousin to cancer, and who has a brother and SIL who have survived cancer, and as a person who is a huge ally for the LGBTQ+ community, and as a daughter of an Army Ranger who is tolerant and accepting of everyone from all walks of life..I am extremely disappointed and bummed out by the league's actions and by bitty baby bettman knuckling under to the minority of jackass players and fans who want to kill all of this based on hatred for Pride, because let's be honest–this is 100% based on anti-pride rhetoric. If it was just the military support jerseys or the 'hockey fights cancer' jerseys at play, we wouldn't even be having this discussion. This is 100% because of the Pride jerseys/stick tape/etc, and good god almighty does that suck and make me lose faith in the fans and the league. Yeesh. A handful of intolerant players and a whole lot of bigoted noisy fans win and everyone else loses. Barf. 🙁

  7. Love the trade, basically low-risk, high-reward.

Best case: Johansen can be a really solid 2C who wins faceoffs and contributes some offense.
Worst case: He can't recover well from his injury and you buy him out after one year with just one-year $4m, which isn't that big of a deal. And you paid zero assets to acquire him.

So the Avs need a RHD to replace Erik Johnson – I'm curious who you guys have your eye on for that role? I like Scott Mayfield, who is a UFA and doesn't seem likely to re-sign with the Islanders (they already have 6 D under contract and only ~$4m of cap space left currently). He seems like an ideal partner for Girard on the third pairing because each of their strengths (Girard: zone exits & skating; Mayfield: size/net-front presence) are the others' weaknesses so, in my mind, work well together. Mayfield is 30 and coming off a contract with an AAV of $1.45m, so he is likely affordable too. Adding another big body at 6'5 220 also potentially means you don't have to use MacDermid as much, maybe you even try to move him to get a million of cap free for someone else.
